Dave,
A few shots to help you with your project: |
Wow! Another major 382 upgrade project. Looks like you'll have your work cut out for you on getting clearance for the intakes - major deck and sunpad work?
|
Sunpad/hatch
I was really surprised. Formula pricing on the hatch, trunk, trunk insert and hinges was only around 3500.00. Their engineering team provided details on everything to do the conversion. The trunk insert is a bolt on item to clearance the blowers. Speed should be mid 90's. I'm moving the thru hulls for the gen & macerator to the notch below the transom. This should clean up the bottom a little. I never run the gen unless I'm on anchor or tied. As far as cost...165K. The sale of the 525's & Drives will offset that by 50K hopefully. The cost of whipples & Imcos or X drives would have been about 100K with head gaskets, gimbles, helmets and such. So it seems about a wash with 700's and I have a 1 year warrenty so we will see. Thanks, Dave

The hatch would be cool but!!! my copilot would be pissed. {wife}. I'm trying to be inconspicuous, I had built 780hp 598s darts single carb natrail asp. problem with trying to stay inconspicuous is the arnesons. should be 105 to 109mph. if not I've built the motors at 8to1 compression, meaning whipple time. jenks

Transom Assy's
Some photos of transom assys. One is from the bottom up. You cannot see all this cool stuff with the plastic shroud on.

One more
Stout gimble top
|
............ Awesome
|
Unreal how stout that stuff is ....m
|
do you have pics of the bilge. need to compare. thanks.
|
Any paticular angle? I think bilges are all the same on 382's. Dan did have to trim a little from the inner liner to get the inner rings to fit. It's finished so well you can't tell though.
|
more of rigging behind rear seat. pumps, vacuflush, and wiring etc. I had to trim a lot out of the inner liner for arneson install.
|
I am going to try to leave the flip up floor panels out. We are going to try to mount the vacuflush on the starbord side alongside the gunnel instead of in front of the motor. This will improve access to the sea strainers. If that does not fit I'm going to mount the strainers both on the port side for easy access. I have a factory photo showing the vacflush fits (barely) in front of the crank pulley. Laney removed the genset and mounted the vacflush in the gen compartment.
|
lose the gen. to much weight or I'm just jealous, nought sure. I found a space to put my tank in gunnel but hidden under seat. also found a cool place to hide 4 optimas.PM me with phone # and I can try to explain. jenks (wes)

One Motor In
It looks like these 700's actually set back 1" or more than the 525's. I was concerned that we would not have room for stuff in front. The trans slides into the transom assy..slick. The engines do not have to come out to get the trans out. The transmissions have a lip seal around the perimeter to seal against the transom housing. I guess if the bellows leak or are torn the boat does not sink right away.

Cool Project.................Nice and Clean!
Jon |
you had to cut your beer cooler out! thats to bad, kind'a like mine.
|
Beer Cooler
Formula is sending me a "new and improved" bolt on beer cooler to clearance the blowers...we will see..........
|
Nice project and great workmanship. It looks like you've got some help, as opposed to flying solo. My wife was a huge help in the cleaning and painting stages, but can't really contribute to the rigging process.
One thing you might consider is to buy another battery tray from Formula and fit it to the starboard side. That's what I did, and it gave me a great shelf to mount to a pair of house batteries. I'll try to get a picture of it in the next day or two. That would be a good place for the Vflush unit - I have seen some 382's set up that way. |

The photos will really help. I want to move the vac flush and battery so I can easily access the sea strainers. I'm not sure I will re-install the hinged floors. Thanks

Twins, I think I'll have a cigar
600 pounds, 40" long....Thanks for the battery pics. It looks like my vac flush will fit alongside the gunnel next to the motor. Does anyone see a problem with that?
|
Man! You are making real progress. Have you got a team of guys working on that thing full-time?
...You might just check and see if you can get the Vacuflush system in and out without having to pull the starboard engine. (Maybe just the headers????) It's amazing how small that "huge" engine compartment gets when you stuff all the machinery in there..... |
I wish I could leave the trunk out and make a full size hatch cover. It sure adds access near the transom. I can get the tank out. With the captains call assy gone it's not that big of a deal to remove the headers to get to the batteries or vac tank. Formula said they did not see any problem with the tank on the side. I'm leaving the floors out to access the strainers. I'm moving the seacocks from the bottom to the notch in the transom. We'll see. Thanks for the input guys. Dave

Cool project !
Did the transom have to be redone ? Just looking at the pic's of the transom before and after, it appears that the bravo cutout is slightly lower than the NXT. |
Transom
The lower 1" of the bravo cutout had to be filled. All the upper bravo holes were removed with the larger NXT cutout. The latham steering holes were filled and the transom gelcoated inside and out. The exaust holes are about the same. We went from 4'' to 5" for the Gatlin mufflers.
|
Almost finished
The merc rep is supposed to be here monday, should sea trial tuesday, leave for Desert Storm wednesday.....Good Grief. Here is a transom photo of the new drives.
