questions about a 400ss
Looking at some newer 400ss' Some are merc powered and some are diesel. I know the speeds are slower with diesel but mileage is better. Would appreciate any opinions on either boat. Going to reside at LOTO. Also curious on the ride of boat like this. Gearing more toward the hardtop version of each. Thnks.

The 400SS is a great boat for anyone that is not quite ready for a full out cruiser and can't fit the sport boat area.
I have an 07 400SS Hardtop with the Volvo Diesels and I love the boat. My previous boat was 2005 35' Fountain Lightning with 525's. I really liked the 525's, but in my opinion it didn't quite fit the bill for the classiness of the 400SS. The 400SS has a beautiful ride and the diesels are efficient and quiet. Around 40mph, the boat will burn ~28gph combined. It tops out around 46-47mph. The hardtop is very nice and my wife preferred it over the arch. I will say that I'm glad I have the bow thruster and feel it is necessary on the 400SS. A 40' stern drive boat with an 11' beam is difficult to manuever the bow.
I've been contemplating selling my boat just to reduce some personal debt. If you're interested in more information or pictures, let me know via email at [email protected].

Drove one from Newport RI to Norwalk Ct in Rough conditions
10-12 footers in the Race (south of newport). Very capable boat the one I had was Diesel Powered and besides a small amount of diesel smell when I had a tail wind Highly recomend a diesel powered boat over a Gas, the 350 ss we had with us(2x496) had to fuel up two thirds of the way there and I still had two thirds of a tank the boat I had ran just shy of 50
once we got into LI sound and the water calmed down to 2-4 footers
p.s. I second the bow thruster!!!

Having ridden on both Merc 525 and Volvo 370DP boats, I'd take the deisels hands-down. Like Viper TT says - they fit the personality of the boat better, and high 40's is plenty fast, especially if the water is anything but smooth. The Volvo's don't sound like deisels, and you rarely smell either exhaust or fuel.
