Hey If its any help after all this.I also own a 292 and I truck it with a 2500 2001 burb.I have to say the 6.0 gets a healthy work out.If I were to look again I would lean more for the 8.1 .I had to put a air ride on my burb before I went to the Ozarks last year.When I tow local it is just fine.And rides well with no load too.Hope this gave some insight to your problem but,for long hauls its at its max.Be safe or have fun before.

I had a 1998 GM/7.4 3/4 ton long bed extended cab 4x4. Used it to pull our 29 Fountain which I know is lighter that the 292, and it was no ball of fire on some of the long hills in my area. I loved that truck, but traded it on a 2005 GMC a couple years ago. This time I got a Duramax w/Allison tranny, long bed extended cab. What a difference, like the boat wasn't back there. Then last summer we bought a 357 SR-1 . Never scaled it but I'm guessing close to 14,000# w/fuel. Pulled it from Florida to Pa. with ease. Got 15mpg in the southern states and 13mpg in the mountains thru Va. and WV. My other truck got 11mpg by itself.
More power than you'll ever need, but it too is over loaded but you'd never know it. Had a dually for awhile, but not a good daily driver.
If you do decide to get another truck, try the diesel, you'll love it.

I have the solution for you ..... go with the american dream.

Buy a Toyota Tundra Crewmax 4X4 with the 5.7 litre.

Tons of room in it .... good gas mileage ..... more power you know what to do with ...... AWESOME brakes ..... absolutley enough truck for your application.
Don't take my word for it check it out for yourself.

More importantly if you can use the 2500s you and buddies have for the "once and awhile" trailering, other then the fact you just want one ...... why spend the money.

I tow my 292 with a 2005 Silverado crew cab, short bed, 4X4 - Duramax/Allison. Been towing boats for 22 years and this is my first diesel. I will never go back to gas for towing heavy loads. Plus, for a 3/4 ton diesel it rides nice and is quite. We put 2200 miles on it for a Florida vacation last year (didn't bring the boat) and it was great.

Thanks guys for all the info. I take it my 1500 would gain 60,000mi in 2 miles pulling that thing. If we have to tow it we'll use my father in laws 2500hd. We keep it at the lake all summer and store it out there also. I was just weighing my options this year because we won't be up there that much.

Alright, I do apologize. This is a friendly forum, but folks are CONSTANTLY coming on here looking for the answer they want to hear, especially on this subject. The search function works wonderfully.
