For those who have removed their Silent Thunder box......

...what does it look like under there? Are there unfinished surfaces? Any surprises, or is it as simple as removing the mounting bolts and dropping it down? I looked at mine and it looks way to easy. I don't want to get into a project to then have it mushroom into something unexpected. What feeds the exhaust into the box?

Any insight is much appreciated.

Should be a finished product. The boat was built and the they added the platform on.My was off when I purchased it and had a custom one made by extreme marine.Good job they do.Hope this helps.

Very easy, only a few bolts. You can do it alone but a buddy comes in very handy. Most folks just put the bolts back in the holes. Don't forget to put clamp on rubber flappers on the tips.

When I pulled mine off the sealant used between the box and the transom pulled a little gelcoat off with it. It was no big deal but I did have to re spray the transom. The gelcoat behind the box was also very discolored.

Interesting. That's the kind of info I'm looking for...........the unexpected.

Thanks for all replies.

I don't think you'll have that problem. The Silent Thunder on a 311 is very different from a 303. The top half of yours is all part of the hull so you are really just dropping the bottom. The whole thing comes off with our 311's.

A girl at my marina dropped the bottom of her Silent Thunder on a 336. No problems, she has 502's, very loud.

That's right. Good point.

Everyone should realize there is a big difference between the older boats and the new boats regarding Silent Thunder.Just be sure which model you are asking about when you post a question, cause the answer can be very different.I responded to a 303 owner,my answer would be different to an older boat, just an FYI.

I didn't have any issues removing mine, but its not that old, only a '98.

There were 4 (I think) bolts holding it to the swim platform and two to the transom.

They had a sealant around the actual exhaust ports, so I had to wiggle and pull on it a bit, which had me nervous, but it finally came off.

I cleaned up the excess, put on some rubber flaps and away I went.

That coupled with the Stainless Marine exhaust really opened up the rumble. :drink:

how much do those extreme marine platforms run new?

I have a 2000 312 and mine was real easy, just needed flappers for the exhaust. Later I ended up putting on some nice stainless tips and it sounds and looks so much better.

312 1997 Silent Thunder Crack

I am doing some work on a friends 1997 312 w,502s.Upon looking I noticed the underside of the silent thunder has a large crack in the glass, about 14" long.Water and exhaust exit it now.He must have run it it for awhile for the crack to grow.It is clean through. How much for a new one or is it worth repairing?

My bad, owner has it advertised as a 1994.

I had my box off for a while. Got tired of the noise and complaints after a while, so I put the box back on, but removed the 4 plugs. There is plenty of room to add 4 more holes / plugs allowing more water to escape with plugs out, and improve the sound. I like this sound best. Louder than stock, quieter than wide open exhaust without the crackle. Smooth sound, but very deep and does not irritate my neighbors or when going into marinas in the evening.
