Default 242 -raising X dimension

I'm converting my alpha drive over to a bravo drive. While I've got everything pulled out I'm thinking about raising my x dimension an 1" or 1 1/2". What I'm thinking about doing is glassing in the lower part of the transom and recutting as needed. Whould this work? Has anyone else changed the x on their 242? If so did you see any improvement?

Be allot easier to buy a shorty lower unit. I believe they're available for Bravos. Someone will know and chime in. Plus, if you get the shorter lower and then find it's not good, you can just go back to the normal length and not have a boat that's been irreparably altered.
