new to me '89 272 sr-1
Im extremely happy with my new money pit! :lolhit:
This boat sat on a lift for 90% of its life.. literally! Only 312 hrs! Stock 454's 330hp?? bravo's and 25p mirages (non +) turning out. Whatcha think she'll go? Only thing she needs is: New sundeck vinyl clean/paint drives/k-planes trim indicator lines for drives and k-planes tune up! I have an electrical box in the closet on the port side that says shore power/rev polarity light/ etc etc. I looked in the compartment on the port gunwale(sp?) toward the back seat, but didn't see a chord. I also do not see an onboard charger of anysort or any loose wireing were it MIGHT have been. and why the hell can't i post up any pictures??? |
lets see if this link works.. i put 'em up on here.. http://www.offshoreonly.com/gallery/...0&ppuser=99041

Have the stripes been repainted? I notice the Formula emblems are missing on both sides

Nice looking ride! I like the colors.

Looks nice. It has external water pick-ups, that usually indicates a TRS drive system. Is it a TRS boat? If so, are you sure they're only 330s? As I'm typing this though, I don't think 272's ever came with TRS, not enough forward engine bay room.
Whatever, I'm babbling! Must be 330s with external pick-ups, right? |

it appears so, the stripes are in fact paint..

it is infact a bravo boat, I dont know why it has the raw water pickups..
How do i tell if its not the 330 454's? |
yea the paint must be new, this baby SHINES :)

any takers on whats up with that electrical panel in the closet?
it sure is quiet when its running on the trailor. My 235 chapparal(forsale) is louder with a single sbc thru hull. Do these swim platforms typically hold water when its running, or when just sitting in the water? I noticed that the water predominantly comes out of the weep holes ( about 3/4inch in dia. appearing factory) on the underside of the platform. I can only imagine that whatever is in the platform making it so quiet is extrememly restictive and MUST be removed :) How does the whole operation work w the silent thunder(is it?) exhaust? Thanks! Dom |
I'll tell you its 330's 365's were only offered in 91 I believe

Dom http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/f...-platform.html electrical panel in the closet ..... There should be a Shore Power hookup on the Port Side Just inside the Sliding Door in the Cockpit ...Towards the Stern ...Possibly they used the same Panel even when the Shore Power wasnt installed ...If not there easy fix ... There is just a 12/2 UF cable from the 30amp recepticle inside the Sliding door area up to the AC/DC Panel in the Cabin ........m |
LMFAO @ THAT LINK!! Thats what im talking about!
As for the shore power deal. Can you elaborate a lil more on it? Where would the battery charger be located? Thanks! Dom |

so can i still run 87??
|
yes
|
that is the minimum required, even my 502 has a min of 87, I always use 89 or better usually 89
|
well i just had someone piss in my corn flakes.. both motors low on oil pressure, port 20 warm idle stbd 10 warm idle and oh lucky me the stbd is making all kinds of ruckus inside!!! yay!!
|
That SUCKS!
|
yes it does suck, yes i spoke to the marina.. going to have his mechanic look @ it, but i already know its wasted.. Im pretty up to snuff w motors just dont do it for a living.. anything w a motor im into and fairly knowledgeable about.
**ck my life |
sorry to hear this, 20 after being warmed up at idly isnt too bad, but theres a fine line there between 10/20
|
ok evidentally these stock guages arent very accurate. My buddy came over and we hooked up a mechanical guage to the remote oil filter housing via the pipe threaded service port on the side. We had 30@ idle cold while the stock guage said 20.. so that is good provided that this is and accurate means of reading the pressure.
That horrible noise ended up being the water pump. I ended up taking all the belts off after i cooled off a bit and ran it with just the raw water pump belt on.. no noise, just valve train/lifter noise.. I plan on pulling the VC's to inspect that issue. There is also a really nasty oil leak coming from i believe the front main seal, but ill adress that issue when i have the water pump off. So all in all im feeling ALOT better about the boat after i was about to go postal. A lil ticked off that im doing all these things to a boat that was supposed to be ok mechanically, but thats just boats in general i guess. Well, i guess i shoulda started troubleshooting the noise a lil more before i cam on here an ranted a bit. but it made me feel better, my wife wouldnt of understood LOLOLOL |
Lol
|
Glad to hear that you are not too bad off. If the boat sat for a while the gauges could be a little off. I had the same issue with mine. The one temp gauge was reading way high. When I put one on the motor direct it was fine. After a little running the gauge came back in line.
|
well i found a circ pump for like 95 shipped! awaiting good weather to put that one. I also found a set(full set!) of stainless marine exhaust w risers for a trs(ill just chop em down) for 1200. I just pray they are still available by the time i got the cash to drop on em!
Im going to pluck the stbd motor to address the oil leak issue. Ill probably end up replaceing all applicable seals while its out. What is the proper way to pull the motor? I mean i know how to do it, but it is faster w/o the manifolds on? It is ungodly tight in there. Thanks! |
It is much easier without the manifolds on. Mine was not too bad but was pretty tight. Note mine are SBC's. When I put them back I will be installing the outside manifolds once they are in the boat. I would take off everything you can to give yourself as much room as possible. Good luck!
|
Remove as much as u can, thats gonna be a u know what on thet boat, I think you have to remove the outside manifold lift a bit then the the inside manifold, or at least thats the best way I heard, we have several here (mopower):lolhit: who are experts on this
|
I'm just taking my big blocks outta my 272. Had to take both the inner manifolds off but left the outside manifolds on. You can hardly get to the front mounts with the inner manifolds on. Took the power steering pump off as well, anything to make life easier really. Also best to remove your engine hatch completely and your ram. I also took out the rear bench seat as well so as not to damage the vinyl.
272 engine bay is mega tight so be prepared for a few bruises and cuts!! |

How do i tell if its not the 330 454's? Does your boat have sea strainers ? Change your water pick up hoses while engines are out. By the way, nice boat and colors...Good luck |
i planned on doing intakes with the manifolds. My buddy did headers and an intake on his single BBC, and gained approx 500rpm(330hp mind you) I was amazed to say the least. I know headers will flow better then any manifold, but one of the manufacturers advertises only like 13hp less then a header. So with that in mind and going with the stainless marine, Im hoping for 470rpm(lol jk). I would imagine some sort of gain, although I will not witness it as i plan on just doing everything prior to water tests. The manifolds apprear to be leaking externally, so I could imagine what the insides look like. Plus the fact the risers get untouchably hot idleing, so knowing that I can safely assume they are rotted/clogged w rust.
And i dont think my boat has sea strainers?? Where would they be located if so? |
They would be located in the bilge under the motors. I think that with the external water pick ups you SHOULD have them. You may not but it would be a good idea.
|
If they're leaking on the outside, good chance they leak on the inside. After you remove them, pull the riser off, bet it's nearly clogged with scale. I had the same problem with a boat I bought a couple years ago. The previous owner ran the boat while overheating the engines because of no water flow from junk exhaust manifolds. I ended up rebuilding both engines and going with Stainless Marine exhaust. Great so far and I'm sure they'll be trouble free for years. Mine are trs and dry to the tips. Formulas are really nice boats, enjoy. BC

Get the serial #'s off the motors, you can check them or have them checked. The BAM website used to have some lined up by serial #'s.
