Default Controls change in Formula 242

I have a 1988 242 Formula with the stock single throttle/shift control. I want to switch it over to Gaffrig dual controls. Will this be as easy as pulling out the old and dropping in a Gaffrig dual with trim and hooking up the cables? Can I use my existing factory cables? Any suggestions?
Thanks

It is not that hard. You will need new cables though. You may have to fill in the hole a little. I think the gaffrig is a little thinner than the stock merc set up.

I did mine a few years ago on my 242 if I remember right I had to cut the opening out a little length wise. Yes new cables and the right fittings to hook up the shifter to the cables. Not a bad job good luck.

I am curious to know why you would want to do this? What do you think you will gain? i have an 88 242LS as well.

The main reason is because my original control is getting old well maybe its because I had dual controls on my previous Eliminator and I prefer them. The boat has 412hours on it and I've been told I should think about replacing at least the throttle cable anyway so I may just swap out the shifter and cables together.
