Default 496, 502, or 525 engines on 400ss

Getting close to pulling the trigger, debating between a few different boats.

Which engines would anyone recommend?

Any advice good or bad?

Gas consumption really isn't an issue, as our lake is small and there won't be a lot of running in the boat... basically float enjoy the music, generator, etc... then a quick fast 10 minute run to a new cove or back to the marina... maybe something like this a few times per weekend.

I like to go fast and get on plane quick... typically am a full-speed type person.

I am mainly concerned with engine problems, maintenance, wear on drives.. Seems like most boats I look at have the Bravo 3x or Bravo 3XR.

Thanks in advance!

The 496 OUT of the? they quit making them..may be a peoblem getting parts in the future.

The 502 would be my choice,, its been and the new 502 probably be as reliable as the older version mpi..

The 525,, for the extra amount of money your going to spend for a extra ma be 5mph in that heavy of a boat it wouldn't be worth it..plus the maintenance in the future that the 525's are known for..

conclusion, i would stick with old faithful 502 which would be the best bang for the buck and a pair of bravo 3xr's..

The 496's are a good engine. Parts will be around for ever, Just like the old 454's. In fresh water you can get 1000 hours plus.
Good on gas. Why spend the extra $$ you won't get it back on that boat unless you steal it. How about a NEW 370SS 08 (0) hours for 199K with warranty. I know where one is. or even a better deal a 31PC loaded with Bow Thruster for 155K New 0 hours. This one is a steal with 496's. It will run a true 50 mph

My 06 has the 525's and runs great, it tops out at 60 which i believe is 10 more than the 496's

I have 200 hrs on mine and just had both drives gone thru ( it was time) but i run in the ocean which is way harder than what you would be doing so i would expect that you would get a lot more hours on your drives.

Buying a used boat right now i don't think you would cost much more if anything to find one with 525's

Now if you could get one with 700's that would be the ticket

58 mph with 500efi's turn key and with silent choice still gives you the thunder you get with your go fast. On the resale market not much difference in price, you have to go with the beat deal.

Agree. 496's are much cheaper to buy and feed. If you're not going to have a lot of opportunity to take advantage of bigger motors, then stick with the 496.
