88 242 question

Hi everyone
I got a 242. My question is I am in the process of building a new engine I had the 454 mag in it. I am buliding a 540 with around 645-655hp I am wondering if anyone one the board can tell me what speeds I will see out of it? It was to slow with stock power. I have a bravo drive which is going to be upgraded. I will post pics also soon

Thanks

There is a 242 on ebay for sale right now with a 502 running a small blower. The guy said it is making 600 hp and at WOT it is running right at 70 mph. So if this it true then I would guess 72-74 mph???

Again that is just a guess as I do not know the guy personally so I don't know if his boat is actually 600 hp or 70 mph....

I would agree with that low 70-75mph would be right. There were a couple on here that made over 550hp if I remember right and did just about 70. Remember that is a good speed for a hull made over 20 years ago, low x deminsion, 24 degree hull and a hook in the hull built in. This boat should ride very nice.

I have a 242 ls with a 509 bbc, going thru an alpha, and it has seen 75 on gps with 1/4 tank of gas and no gear with a 23 pitch mirage plus with a blue printed bottom, alpha FTW!!!!!! its faster than my buddys 271 with a 502 and fathers 302 sr1 with 496s.

What kind of power are you making?

chewymalone 01-03-2011 05:17 PM

Built a 496 making 620HP in mine back when I had it. Top end was 71 on GPS with Bravo X upper and Imco XR lower. Had the hook taken out of the hull. Cruising speed improved but top end did not.

This is rather interresting, I know of verified speed of 61+ mph with a stock 502 mag Bravo1. I am not sure if that engine used to have 415
or 425 hp. Then you increase the horse power with 50% to 620 hp and a better drive line. The result is 10 mph???? I would have been rather disapointed.

What kind of power to reach 80 mph++`????

Chewy, I knew someone had taken the hook out of the bottom, so know real change. That is a great step up to a TG maybe some day:drink:

Alot, unfortunately these hull are notoriously slow!!!! Most of the earlier formulas are.

People say Bajas are junk but all I have owned were pretty easy to get moving with decent power.

I am buying a Formula 272 though. I feel that the lack of speed is made up for in solid quality!

86242, Do you have seperate cooling raw water pump for your 509 or do you just use the alpha.

Thanks

86242ls 01-07-2011 04:34 PM

just using the alpha for now, I plan to upgrade to a bravo setup at some point $$$$....

Its already broke that...

I agree with the others that you should see low to mid 70's. I have around 525-550 hp and I see 65 mph in chop with a mirage 21 non plus that is not in perfect shape.. With the prop dialed in I should be around 67-68. Great boat, it just takes a lot of power to get moving fast.

Hey I run out there to. What colors are your boat? I have a 233 with a 632ci in it . with a bravo The best I can get is 77 gps. I did the transom change over from alpha to bravo after I wiped out two alphas. The boat was scary I did a full hydraulic setup with a box on it now. Its much better

What rpms are you turning with that 23 pitch prop. IMO it takes a lot more power than mid 500 to get to 75 in a 242. I have between 525-550 hp and I'm only getting 65 mph via gps?

Waterdogs 02-01-2011 08:44 PM

I used to see 67+ on GPS speedo with a labbed bravo 24P, 4 adults and a half tank. I'm told the motor is putting out just south of 500HP, but never saw a dyno.
