The 271 needs 600+ HP to become a fast boat

Theres a whipple charded 620 HP 271 out here doing 82 MPH

Its similar to the 353 Fastech

75 MPH on twin 425 HP
80 on twin 525 EFI

90 + MPH on twin 600 Mercs

Especially the high torque of the supercharged engines give a great performance boost to the boats

Well I have a 1993 271 sr1.

I have installed a 540 whipple engine. 830 Hp.

I run a bravo xr 1.50 and are into testing propellers,

I run now 80 miles, at 5500 rpm, with a bravo1 28 pitch.

The problem is now that the boat bounces from side to side and get really uncomfortable to drive.

So I am wondering what to do..

You should add some large 380 race tabs

This "toy Bennet tabs " are not real high performance tabs and only work up to 70 MPH since they are very short

I have a 2000 271 502/415, 1:65; I have played with the gears (1:50) and props. Right now it is back to stock gears w/ a 26" LH prop and can hit 66 on gps in the 'right' conditions w/o beating her. As stated previously she can be some work getting up on plane w a full load. Pulling the drive pin did help, so did venting the cavitation plate. The boat likes tab to prevent porposing. Overall it is a great riding boat and we are very pleased, especially here in NJ when other boats of this size are getting pounded by larger boat wake and SW winds. I don't think anyone who expects to reach speeds in the 80's should consider a 27 ft boat, we tend to run out of hull in smaller boats capable of those speeds!!!!

I have a Fastech 271 with a 700hp 540. Once the boat passes 75 it chine walks pretty bad. I have large 280 Merc tabs. It gets to be a little scary above 80. Top speed is around 85 GPS right now. Jeff Wurl

To eliminate the chine walk try a shorty in combination with large tabs

Will get more difficult to plane but no more chine walk at high speeds

I hope that along with all that power, you installed hydraulic steering.

I turn a 30p bravo1 LH prop that Bblades did work on its actually a 29.5 pitch. I turn it 5100 i run a solid 77 on GPS fastest speed i have seen was 79 on GPS

I had a 2000 271 Whippled 502, 630HP, XR drive 1.5 with a 26p Bravo 1 that would touch 80 mph. Had to burn 93 Octane.
Got rid of the Whipple and built a 500 EFI, dynoed 572 HP @ 5400. Same drive, same prop ran 70-72 @ 5100. With a 24p Bravo 1 would run 74-75 @ 5400. Ran 89 octane. no problems.
BTW, I added IMCO steering, made all the difference in the world..

Sold the boat April 2010 the new owner loves it.
I now have a 1993 SR 336 and love it..
