any info on the transom rotting out? is it common? big job if needed to replace?

Not common, but like any older boat if it hasn't been taken care of it will rot out, big job? well ya probally but not impossible

Yeah, I think I might call that a pretty big job. I just did the transom on my 16ft center console I use for fishing/crabbing and I thought that was a pain!!

You would have to pull the engines and all running gear, cut the transom out, replace the wood, glass, and put everything back.....pretty big job.

If the outside layer is still solid as well as the gel coat...you can pull the inside plywood off in layers and bring it back with new marine plywood. Google Frisco Garrets on You Tube. He is in the process of doing a rotten Sea Ray...you might get some idea of what you are up against.
