87 242SS w 454 Mag/Alpha 1 ignition timing
Hello, i bought this boat last year, runs well....just changed the oil, fuel filter and checked the base ignition timing and it was right at the factory 8 degrees, is there any power in advancing the timing if i run premium fuel
(91 octane R+M/2) rather than the factory recommended minumum of 87 octane?

FYI...with these marine distributors your real timing number is the total advance at ...say...3000 RPM. Check your spec...I am guessing you should be getting 30~32 deg at 3000 RPM. As you know...you need a timing light with a dial to check this.
Also FYI....If you are running a Q-Jet and have any issues with it I suggest Cliff Ruggles at Cliff's High Performance (google for url). He is an expert on Q-Jets and sells a MARINE Q-Jet re-build kit that is complete including a new float that is ethanol compatible. Give him your Carb No and he will customize a kit for you.
