I found some rotted wood in my new to me 242 drivers bolster. I was trying to see how these bolsters were built. Has anyone ever tore them down to have them re upholstered?

I've re-built the McCloud bolters on my 1997 419 with good luck. Look underneath, unbolt from s.s. plate on the side of boat and from the inside vertical support. These should be 1/4" s.s. hex head bolts. Then, there are two screws in the rear of the seat that attach the seat to the wood/vinyle support that surrounds the back of the seat. Once you remove the seat, there is a fiberglass surround with vinyle wrapped around it. that un-bolts from the top part of the seat. The remaining wood inside is generally 1/2" plywood and the main structural support is multiple layers of 3/4" plywood coated in some kind of resin. The center back support and head rest is one piece and is removed by thru bolts into the main seat structure. When replacing the wood, be sure to use some kind of air expanded pvc sheets. You can get them in the same thickness as the plywood and they are much less expensive than "starboard", although starboard would work. Use "monel" staples as some stainless steel staples still rust. A really well made seat, except for the rotting wood. The other thing is the foam is wrapped in plastic to minimize water retention, I would replace that also. Good Luck. e-mail me at [email protected] and I may be able to forward you some pics of mine. I just can't figure out how to post here, will some day though.
