Formula 382 W/Ilmor 725's
I just put a deposit down on a 382 with Ilmor 725's. Has anyone had experience with the Ilmors? I've only had Merc's and am wondering what the differences are?
|
Is this a new boat? Congrats either way!!!! I had a 2002 with modified mercs. Ran 95+ with 800hp and upper 80's with almost 650hp. Those motors sound strange but I would love to have them (and that Indy drive). Will be a 90+mph ride too!
|
Congrats
Can't wait to see the performance. I wouldn't buy a new build with anything but Ilmore's. Will it have Indy drives? That will be a great package. The Fx that was built was quite a machine.Did you order factory direct,or thru a dealer. Good luck, and keep us posted. Welcome too BTW. |
Thanks, It is a new build with Indy Drives, and it was ordered through a dealer. My current 382 has 525's, and I'm anxious to see what the new boat will do.
|
I've had both and it will be hard to own another boat that doesnt have Ilmors. Our 650's and Indy's have been great. Good luck with the boat!

CONGRATS! Sounds like an awesome package! You don't mention what stage they're at in the build, but it would be great if you could keep us formula guys up to date by posting some pics as you get them of the progress... :worthless_without_p |

fun toy!

Thanks for the pictures of the Indy Outdrives. Production won't start until after the holidays. It will be complete towards the end of February.
Hopefully I will get pictures of the progress, and be able to post them. |

Welcome to the (Happy) Ilmor Owners Club, a very loyal group.
This is terrific news. A lot of people have been looking forward to this package being built. It's the joining together of two great world-class companies. Your boat should be several mph faster than the 700NXT boats (very close to 100 mph), and will burn far less fuel than just about any other package that you could have chosen. I'm jealous. What paint scheme and options are you going for? By the way, I'm ecstatic with my 725/Indy package. :drink: |

Ive got three seasons on a 710 and the mill is wicked. If my boat liked Cleavers I'd have an Indy. Ilmor's product offers a unique end user experience. Guys that buy these mills expect a lot and the consensus is they deliver. Uncle Dave |
Thanks C Spray and Uncle Dave,
The paint scheme will be Silver Shadow with a couple other options and matching custom Eagle Trailer. Uncle Dave, from your pictures it looks like you boat in Arizona. Do you ever go to Lake Powell? If so does the altitude rob you of much power? |

If so does the altitude rob you of much power? Boat about 60% in Az 40% in the ocean. Thats Lake Mead in the pict. For sure heat and altitude take an edge off the performance, and everyone around you takes a hit as well. The guys with blowers are still hit but less hard. The mill still makes tons of beans and always seems to run perfectly with zero transom soot no matter where or how long and hard I seem to run. When I hit the ocean on a crisp morning the mill is just at its very best and likely making over the rated power, but its always thrilling enough to impress your buddies and scare the panties off the chicks. If you can control yourself (it will be hard) you will find you can eek incredible economy out of them. I have run 100+ mile stretches and get 3.3 MPG cruising at around 40 on a lake. I routinely get 2.5 hitting it harder going to catalina. Uncle Dave |

What engine color are you going with?
Build him a set in a custom medium charcoal metallic and get DeBoTech to make two sets of silver carbon shrouds. :drink: Made It Rain - Do you have a photo of the Silver Shadow scheme? I don't see it on Formula's web site. Also, did you get my email last night? |

Many years of enjoyment in your future with that one. Enjoy... |

Ive been boating my whole life and have experience with many different setups, blown and naturally aspirated small and big blocks.
Guys like Cspray and Nascat-this is hardley these first guys rodeo either in fact with my 30 years of boating I might be "Junior" in this crowd. The feel, sound and extended running performance of these mills feels like if you could somehow "scale" up a streetbike engine to 8.4 litres. The way the power rushes in is eerily smooth, and the sound is every hot rodders dream. Everyone knows there a bunch of choices you can make- and each one represents a unique tradeoff in what you get. Many of my friends that made the "other 700" choice are now at the stage where they are having to go inside the top ends. Not all, but the ones that arent there yet know its coming like a trip to the dentist.. Its going to be expensive, Its going to hurt, Its going to take time, and at BEST it wont ruin a trip. The feedback you can gather from posts on this site alone suggests the Ilmor will require 1/3 the maintenance to 750 hours as competing products. One can debate wether its as much as 1/5 or as little as 1/2 but its well documented that it's a significant difference. I have no qualms whatsoever about joining a group of friends for some sustained high RPM running. this thing is balanced tighter than a swiss watch and just sings. Every single guy thats sticked my rig has come away impressed. Then we compare fuel bills and real jealousy starts. I can take 5 people to Catalina on Saturday morning, and come back in the afternoon for the same relative cost as seeing an Imax movie at the mall. Performance boaters always say gas is the cheapest part and I can confirm with Ilmors this will be very true. There are a few guys with really high hour mills out there like 600+ still running well, and the causaul rumour mill says Ilmor is just now starting to see rebuilds come in. I cant speak for them. I can say that the ilmor ownership experience is much more automotive than marine like in comparison and the reduction in shop time is significant. Basic Fluid and impeller changes at regular intervals and go hit the water. Uncle Dave |

Will this Ilmore boat be ready for the Miami show in Feb? I suppose if it is Formula would want to display it or have it in the water......
