419 Fastech....hmmm
I'm not currently in the market or ready to upgrade to a bigger boat, but I wouldnt be a good boater if I wasnt thinking about it..
Here's what I'm thinking when the time is right. Buy a 419 Fastech, 99 thru 2001. Take the power, drives and whatever else is needed out of my 353, and make a twin 800hp 419. I would be able to repower my 353 with the 500efi's that came in the 419, still have 1 500efi and extra parts to sell. Even though my Bravo's are already highly modified, I know they wont last behind the big boat, but thinking about it Cig has been putting Bravo's behind 11,500lb 42ft Tigers for years. And with the weight reduction of at least 1500lbs(motor,drive,pumps,generator and such), I can see the 419 coming in close to that weight. Seeing clean 419's going for 75k, and TS Tigers still pulling at least twice that, the idea doesnt sound so crazy. Where I boat the Cig's do dominate with their rough water prowness(not that they can catch me), but I would think the 419 would be no slouch. Some questions I have: Would a 419 come on plane with 2 engines? Would the wider drive spacing cause issues? What would happen to the balance of the boat? How would it fly? I love the idea of the big cabin, big cockpit and even bigger engine compartment, making future upgrade possible(staggered, arnesons, sixes..) Any thoughts?? LE |
Check this thread.
Another 419 thread You will be in for some pretty big stringer issues. The cockpit and cabin of a 419 are not that much bigger than a 382, but you would be able to run a full-stagger engine setup. |
I 've always thought a 419 with (2) 1000 hp and #6 drives would be the ultimate offshore ride!
|
Updating a 97 fastec 419 now. Setting it up with new cabin upolstry, new factory cockpit vinyl , painted dash silver, removed engines, drives and tabs. Figured I would market boat cosmetically as new with 525 sc engines disassembled and with bravo 1 drives and let someone build their own engines for the boat. I really don't see it that difficult to rearrange the stringers, plug transom and install twin staggered. Boat ran 62 mph on two engines (center and port) with prop off of starboard drive. Got on plane with a little help from the tabs. Ran 83 mph with all three. I would love to see this boat with twin staggered high horsepower engines. Great riding boat, wave crusher.

If I were to try this with a 419, the intial build would be to leave both the outside motors on their original mounts(just use my motors), and remove the middle, the gen and what ever else isnt needed. I probably would put a plate on the middle transom assembly to test the boat with the twin configuration to make sure it would work before filling the transom.
My budget would hardly be endless, I would have to get the 353 back to running condition and try to sell it in this crappy economy. More HP, staggered, and different drives would be down the road. I'm not even sure if staggered would be necessary. I'm just wondering how a twin 800hp, Bravo 419 Fastech would run, handle, and top out at? If a triple 500hp boat runs at 80mph, what can I expect? I really love how efficient the 353 hull is, extra weight hardly slows it down. Is the 419 as efficient? LE |
Does anybody have an idea on the production count of the 419? I know 2001 was the last year they were in the literature.
What about the centerline of the back engines, looking at some pictures I'm guessing at least 38" on center. LE |
I have toyed with this same idea for the bigger space everywhere else in the boat.
Since the 382 Fastech is two mills side x side I don't see where the 419 with big power X2 would be much different at all. Reduce some weight and have more power seems like a great option. Tripples are so heavy in the rear that loosing some weight and adding more power seems natural to me. Go for it..........before I do. :lolhit: Well either that or I would do a 400SS. |
I was thinking about this. I would keep the driveline engine and one of the closed couple engines. Sell the second close couple engine and drive (big market for that). Seems like that should be a easy sell. Gives you some money to kick off the next phase.
Then you have a driveline engine. Reconfigure the stringers and move it outboard 10". Move the other close couple engine in 10" (assuming 40" c to c to start with). Now you have a full stagger on 20" centers. You could test with those engines to work out the kinks without the big engines acquiring a bunch of test time. You could still run the 353 for that time also. Once the setup is dialed in, swap the big engines in 419, others in the 353 and you are set. See how easy that was. Just solved all your problems, take pictures so we can follow along on here. :coolcowboy: |

Think how many more people you could fit on the 419! That just may pay itself... Youll have to change the name to the friday night "booze cruise".......... :)
Hope all is well Scott. Jr. All is good. An upgrade to a 419 is just a thought, and definitely a few years away. See ya on KI.. LE |

Would probably need a guy to help me set that up. You know anyone?? |
Is that vintage 419 a liner boat? It's hard to tell from most pictures due to the engine room being packed.
Here is a 1998, it looks like its a stringer boat: http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listi...8945&noOfPic=2 |

When Formula started the Fastech line in 97, the 419 got the steps but not the liner. They stopped production of the 419 after 2001. Formula's plywood grid system is very strong, just got to watch for water injestion, my 311 was getting soft before I sold it. The plywood is not as hardy as regular wood.

I've had my eye on the red one in the classifieds for a while. Not quite ready to pull the trigger on a new boat but the 419 is really high on my list. The 98 with the arch actually doesn't look like too bad a boat, just not a fan of the colors or the arch. I'd rather have the 500 EFI's (I think?) versus the carb motors. |
The red "99" here is nice. The only thing missing is a generator. bummer

Obviously I'm not the only one with 419 on the brain. The red '99 looks like a killer deal no matter what kind of plans someone has for it.
Too bad for me I'm not ready for an upgrade. Maybe some one will snatch it up for 75k now, keep it it great shape, and I can buy it from them in 2 or 3 yrs for even less. I can only imagine the sticker on a 419 new.. Were talking 325k plus new, right? Not many articles on the 419 Fastech(i havent found any), but comparing it to the 353 tests with 500's and up(@225k +) the 419 had to have a pretty hefty sticker. Sucks that it depreciated so much. Well not for someone in the market now, I guess. LE |

Jeff, when did you see the boat? Some of the pics look older... How is the headliner? |
LE this is a great plan ....I have posted in several threads talking about a great project and great setup ....The Staggered 419 is the bomb ....you idea of running the outside motors first is a good idea ....can't wait !!!! ....m

Bingo. But, it would be a pretty strait forward install.
Yes and with the "run bigger power in the two outside engines" idea and dumping the front motor there would be plenty space for the genny. I'm on the fence between a 419 or 400SS  The red 419 would be awesome with 2 Merc 1100's. |
I,d rather have 3 small bone stock engines than twin 1100's with special drives almost no one can service... I,m also looking seriously between 419, 370 ss or 400 ss,38 - 42 sonic... Last 99 419 I know of was from a member here, and I think it sold around high 50 low 60k...
I went to see this boat in august 2011. I was in vacation, left home by boat to go down to atlantic city with my 35-7. so, called and went to see boat at seller's house. Boat is mint. only thing wrong was not really the headliner on the top, but the tissus on both sides of the kind of division between the v berth and u shaped seat... gen and full canvas and silent choice are missing for me... sold my boat in august, still not decided on what to buy... Even if we think 75 is a steal, I really don't think so, because of resale value because of triple in this economy, higher rates to insure triple, and simply the poor market right now with any toy... shogreen has a 2000 42 sonic full equiped except gen, everybody say for 75k it is a lot of boat, but noone has bought it yet...I have a number in my head for this 419, but never made an offer...we can get a same year 400 ss for same price, wich I think is much better on resale... IMO |
here is a picture. you can also go the this link for much better pictures of this 419 !

IMO My thought on the 1100's is the drives should never be a problem like a Bravo on big boats. Yes $75K doesn't sound bad but not a selling price obviously. I have some reservations too. One is the engines previously run in brackish/salt and no closed cooling. Maybe they are fine but for how long? That is one thing that $75K doesn't work for me. My consideration buying it is a total repower and for that the $75K doesn't mean much. Nice reference that you have put eye balls on it. Price per foot it is not bad. |

curiosity, what would be your buying number for this boat? Yes, for sale for a long time and though it is nice it needs a lot of work for my satisfaction. I'm not opposed to making a great piece out of it but I would be tough on the price. My thought is between 50 and 60 on the up side. Possibly less if it would work. I would start at 45. It doesn't have the fiberglass grid system for one and I have not seen the windshield sticker, that I always get from Formula when I'm checking out one to buy, to know any other considerations like Kevlar so that is against the price to me. I don't consider the power worth more than selling but that is just me. |
I saw that it could have gone a year ago at 50. Sounds like great leverage.
Replace all power, interior cabin work, gen, and update instrumentation and hang on for a great ride and a big party barge. :grinser010: |
With this 419 I would power with minimum 700's NXT#6's for a solid ride with drives that would stay together. I could go 1100's for a good deal but to keep it simple and less expensive staggering would be out. The gains would not offset the price in my understanding. The engine cover would have to be modified to clear any high power from Merc like the 700's or up. I would not use a bravo behind this 419 or a 382 for that matter.
If we go 400SS it will only be with Volvo Penta drive system for the same reason of not breaking drives. We lean more toward the diesels in this application for the range. Over 350 miles is fabulous for some long range maritime fun. speed - range - speed - range - speed - range - speed - range - speed - range - speed - range ???????????????????????????????? |
Looks like Vern's is for sale...
http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/boa/2812900043.html I think it's priced a bit out of the market, but it is a very nice example. |
I wouldn't worry about bravo drives on a 400SS
i have almost 300 hrs on my 06 with 525's in that time i have broken one drive We run in some big water here and the boat has been flawless. Now granted i don't fly the 400 like i do my Cig but it still moves and handles rough water great. Plus when it's only 1 or 2 footers you can run at 60 But i doubt many people run is as rough water as we do here, so as long as you are smart on how you run the drives will last a long time, |

Definitely over priced, especially compared to the red '99. Anybody have an idea on production numbers for the Fastech 419's. LE |
