Default easy upgrade for 400ss owners (and cheap)

I bought my 400ss (diesel) in august and have been doing a bunch of changes and upgrades. one of the upgrades was to the battery charger , my 400ss (2005) came with a charles 5000 series 80amp charger . when i changed to agm batteries i checked into the charger specs and found out that the 80amp charger can use an external temp sensor. charles ind. advertises it on their new chargers and after research found out that all the 80 amps chargers made can use them. temperature compensation is one of the most important factures in longevity and acheving a full charge. the charger comes with an internal temp sensor but its not accurate do to the fact its in side of the case mounted next to a bunch of electronics.

When you look at a chart showing what voltage your batteries are to be charged at , the chart assumes an industry standard 77 degrees . so unless your batteries are being charged (and as importantly stored) at 77 degrees, they are being over or under charged. either one well significantly shortant their lives.

ex: a deka agm battery should be charged at 14.80 volts when they are at 50 degrees but on a hot summers day or when the engines have heated up the engine compartment to 95 degrees they should only see 14.00 volts. same goes with float charge , 50 deg=13.90 and 95 deg =13.10.

improper charging/float voltage can shorten battery life upto half and considering a set of agms cost about $1,000 this easily pays for it's self.

to do the upgrade all you have to do is order the sensor (93-TEMPPROBE-A) about 125.00 . to install you just open the front case , plug it into the socket and remove the jumper next to the socket. then place the probe on top of one of your batteries and your done.

this works with the 30, 80 ,and 100amp chaegers.

for more info and charts go to dekabatteries.com , click on products/marine batteries , then click on sealed technical manual. this tech info is good for all different battery manufactures.

Very good info. But I'm sure the regular alternators when your running the engine isn't as sophisticated. So are we saying the alternators doesn't charge the house batteries properly or not at all?
