I have an 02 400 ss with 500 efis and my dad has an 05 400 ss with 496HOs. I've got a lot of time in them both. IMO the biggest difference is not top speed but overall drivability. Mine planes quicker and will hold a plane at a lower rpm. My dads always feels like the motors are struggling. On paper all you'll notice is that the blue motors give you a few more mph on the top end but the difference goes well beyond the top end.
Regardless of engine choice in my opinion the 400 ss is the best lake boat made. I spend weekends on it with the wife and 2 kids. It's not the same accomodations you'll have on a big slow cruiser. But it is plenty good enough to stay 2-3 nights at a time and it still has a lot of the get up and go of a performance boat.

Thats really what I wanted to hear. An what I wan't this boat far. I live on the Amite rive about 40 miles from lake Maurepas then 20 to Ponchartain so this boar really sounds like the way to go. Thanks for the heads up on the engs. Artie

Pros: Cockpit space, overnight cabin space, solid hull, great fit and finish, good stereo, washes and waxes up like new, good windlass/chain/anchor, good storage, great AC with heat, huge fridge, good speed and electronics to cover open water, 250 gallon fuel capacity, huge holding tank, solid engines, stable ride, minimal trim or tab adjustments, can get in shallow compared to pods, good dealer support, and desirable model helps resale.

Cons: Microwave replaced, generator electronics serviced, some important loose wire connections tracked down, one tv replaced, one drive failure, too big to trailer easily, fridge is noisy, deep v rocks a bit at anchor, batteries get drawn down with fridges, cannot plane under 30 in calm water, no built in grill which is pita when portable grills are outlawed, probably cannot carry a jetski/large dinghy off the back.

Thanks double trouble. This is the first I have heard about the noisey a/c. What kind of ele problems did you have. Do you think this caused Your problems? Sounds like it could have. I really love these boats. Does anyone have the larger hydraulic swim platform? how does the boat carry with weight on it? Thanks for all the help. Wish I had one for the Lake Bash this weekend. The refrigerator is noisy, not the AC unit. Newer models have updated models of refrigerators and probably do not have this issue. Or it could be an issue with my fridge.

I believe the electrical issues were new boat kinks that were not obvious and were not aggressively investigated at first. It sure seems to take a lot of owner push to get these things resolved properly. Turned out that the bow thruster wire nuts were very loose, a navigation light was not plugged in, and the generator had a faulty control board plus a bad relay. Lately, all things have been totally fine. I have seen other boats of same vintage with quite few more electrical issues than this maybe electrical belongs in pros instead of cons.

I do not think a hydraulic swim platform is available, you might be thinking of the Formula 40PC or 45 Yacht. The 45 Yacht is worth checking out if you're really into cruising and have a few dollars to spare!
