Was wondering what my 272 cost new, found this old thread...
Well, someone was asking what they cost new. A 292 (most similar for 26 years difference) retails right at $200k + trailer/tax - discount. I guess about $160k to $170k depending. Wow, alot of coin. It is a guess, but doesn't matter as I do not have it!
So, we start wondering what this 86 cost new and through searching, found this thread and post #16 and #18 has some good information in it from 2002.

So my 272LS had a retail of almost $59k + about $3k of options. Cuda's 85 receipt had a 17% discount on it, so I am at $51k + trailer + tax. I am guessing just north $56k (4% tax back then). So, it is worth (to me at least) a bit over a 1/4 of it's original purchase price. $15k for a boat like this seems on the low side, but over 25% of its purchase price after 26 years isn't bad I guess for a toy.
Found this interesting and given we have several new members posting thier new "used" formulas on here lately, thought I would ask does anyone know what the retail/purchase price was for their boat?

Just thought of this, in 1986 I was in high school looking at colleges. Planned to be an engineer, and ME's were forcasting jobs right about $27k to $30k I think back then. That boat cost 2 years salary for a new ME grad.
Not sure now, but I think a new mechanical engineer averages about $60k a year, so a new 292 will run 3x the salary. Granted, you still get 350's, but much better engines, a bit bigger boat and better bravo drives. But it is the most comparable thing I have.
Thank goodness for these old boats, not in the market anytime soon for a brand new one. Plus I just like wrenching on these things too much! I could build some nice small blocks for $10k!
Interested to see what others have as far as info on thier old formulas.

Great thread Brian!!
I found some sale ads for my 1979 255. It listed for 32,900 as equipped and at the end of season were offered at around 24,900. I remember those were tough times and Jimmy Carter was president.
I paid $25K for my '86 242 SS and $55K for my '86 '272 LS with a $30K allowance for my 242 (special deal). I remember paying an extra $3000 to upgrade to the new 320 HP "EFI" SBC's with Alpha SS drives. That was big $$ for a boat of that type then but by comparison I think a 35' Mistress was about $125K. I was making about $50K at the time. Good 'ol Reaganomics.
