looking at a few Formula's
hey everyone,
Looking into getting a 292 SR-1, wanting to sell my 22ft stingray, for something bigger.
But my questions for you guys is, any drawbacks to the 292s? How much do they weigh with twin 454/bravos? Thinking 3/4ton truck territory, How do they handle, and whats the top speed? My buddy has a 1990 292 and i know another guy with a 311 they love them.

I had a 2007 292 Fastech with 350's. A 3/4 ton is more than enough for towing. The boat handled great, but was slow to plane with 6 people on board. Top end was about 70 mph.

The one im looking at is an 88 SR-1, i have an older half ton now but i wana upgrade. Ive heard these boats are kinda heavy but handle well, i dont know much about them really

the 292 SR-1 is an entirely different boat, probably 3 ft longer and at least 2,000 lbs heavier. A 3/4 is certainly needed for that boat. Top end on the 292 SR-1 depending on which 454's (330's vs 385's) will be mid 60's.

I owned a 1990 292 SR1 for 8 years, purchased new in Miami. Towed with a 1/2 ton blazer (blew out the rear axle first weekend boating, then went to a one ton duelly. I would think a 3/4 ton would be pleanty of truck to tow it. I had 365 hp magnums and early bravo 1's. I added nose cones to the bravo 1's (don't need to add if they are 1991+ bravos (IMHO) and that actually helped in both speed and handling. The older bravo 1's would start to blow out at speed. I also added full hydraulic external steering. That made the biggest difference in the handling of the boat. If you can move the drives any while on the trailer, the boat will want to "wander" at speed (as any boat would). Hydraulic steering but the boat on rails. I loved the look of the boat and the fit and finish. Had a friend with a 311 and that is in my opinion probably one of the best SR1's ever built by Formula. It has a little more engine room and a little more cabin room. Also, i think the boat flys a little more stable than the 292 SRI. The best speed I saw with 25" 3 blade props was 70 on a gaffrig speedo. Be carefull, the stock VDO speedo reads about 5 mph high. I also added air conditioning pretty easily under the sink area of the cabin. Easy to tie in electrical, water dump, drain for the a/c pan, return vent and air discharge vent, just can't remember where I picked up the water from to cool the compressor. Anyway, good luck it is a great boat.

292 is a great boat! great ride and performance mags should be around 67 I almost bought a 292 with 502's and after research it seems like it was gonna be a 70/71 mph boat, its bigger then my 303 also, they weren't as popular because there wasn't much of a difference in performance then the 311 so everyone took the size over the 1 or 2 mph. the head is enclosed but only suitable for a 8 yr old at best, most use it for fenders and life jackets

BTW we went with the 303 for a cpl reasons, we were looking at a 91 292 so it had the humps in the back seat which the wife didn't like for lounging around reasons, also the 303 is faster and I contemplated new vs old because I love the old SR1's as much as anybody but I went with the newer fresher look in the end but to be hones it came down to boat vs boat rather the new vs old
