Formula 242 won't engage gear forward or reverse
So I'm driving boat bout 40 mph yesterday and it died , after I got it started it would not engage gear forward or reverse , shaft going into motor would not turn and the smell of burnt rubber was coming out of that area , any ideas here people before I tear the thing apart

Burnt rubber in that area is a sign of a bad coupler usually

When I put a motor in my 223 SS I didnt route the shift cable behind the steering rack like is supposed to be and it chafed on the coupler. I smelled rubber and shut it down and was able to make it home but I imagine if you let it go a little longer you wouldnt be able to get it into gear.
just something easy to check before you yank the motor. |

just something easy to check before you yank the motor. But shouldn't the shaft into the drive always be turning on an alpha or bravo drive? I would think only something with a transmission behind the motor would have an output shaft not turning, like a TRS. Definately points to coupler. Odd that it would kill the motor. I would have thought that you would just stop moving and the motor would rev with the coupling broke and burning from friction. Brian |
Shaft not turning while motor running = failed engine coupler. hf...

Replaced mine last week...not a fun job. Make sure you align your motor after replacing the coupler.

Better check the drive make sure it didn't lock up and tear the coupler
