Fastech 292 - Latham Hydraulic Steering?

Looking at a few 292's for sale out there and I notice some have the Latham Hydraulic Steering on them. Was this a factory option at one time or are they owner/dealer installed? Does the 292 really benefit from this option and a noticeable difference in handling or stability? Thanks

Yes, it was a factory option. Some owners have added it aftermarket...That should answer your second question.

I had Latham Steering installed when the boat was built. It is not on the option sheet, but available if you ask. Hydraulic steering is much better than stock steering with respect to handling, especially running fast in rough water. Hopefully Expensive Date will see this thread and comment. He went a couple years with stock steering on his 292 and recently swapped to hydraulic.

Make sure it is full to the helm to if you want the full benefits of hydraulic steering.

Thanks for the info guys. What does full to the helm mean in comparison to a different type of Latham installation? On Formula's web site is does not actually list it as an option.

There is huge benefit to full hydraulic steering, makes the 292 a different boat. Much more stable with less chine walk (side to side rocking)

Full hydraulic is when the wheel is turned pressure is applied to the steering rams, the benefit of this is there is no play in the system at all.

Add on or partial is just the rams on the back of the boat. The original helm with the cables is still used and there will still be play in the system. The stock steering (cable) on the 292s is junk and they never should have left the factory with it. I did not know how scary it was till I upgraded mine.Attachment 486746

Expensive Date-Hopefully you will see this...I see you are in NJ so wanted some info regarding what you bought and where you got it. I have the motors out and am dropping some 383 strokers in my 292, I hate my steering now so I want to upgrade to full hydraulic. Any insight/info would be very much appreciated!!!
