I am redoing the transom on my 271 sr-1 and now is the perfect time to raise the motor. Has anyone ever done this in there Formula? I was thinking two inch raise.

Why not leave it alone, and do a -2 shorty and see how it handles? 353formula might have some info as he had some drive work done on his 271....

Cost was the major factor. I'm on a tight budget with new transom and paint job. I'm looking at spending 9k within the next month and was thinking I could save a little with raising the motor.

I would leave it alone and find a used lower shortie. I had a -1 on my 271 fastech for a while and the boat was very unsafe bad chine walking. If you do all that work and it's not what you like or does not handle well then your stuck. If you do the lower you can always take it off if its not right....just a thought

To clarify you attributed raising the drive to the chine walking?
The reason I'm asking is just helped a friend decide on the purchase of a -1 Imco for his 271 and we thought it may help with handling issues to get the drive up out of the water a bit.
Was that the only change you made, adding the -1 and it started chine walking afterwards?
Did trim tabs help, and where were they mounted on your hull?
We moved K-planes on a Checkmate down V to center about halfwasy from outside and it helped with stability.

I added the shortie on the boat it was worse getting on plane than the stock lower. I had hyd steering I also had made custom trim tabs (k plane style made for it) I could not move them inwards due to the notch in transom. Also I did have some blueprinting done on the bottom. But mine was also a fastech so were talking two different boats here......

I agree 353 these are two different boats. I'm going to take everyone's advice and keep the X the same and just go with a shorty. These boats are nose heavy and need the motor lower to keep the nose positive and not run flat. I'll keep you posted the wood is going back in this week and the hole is going to be cut by the 2nd.

What was the original depth? If it was 7 or more inches below the hull and I was cutting a new hole anyway, I would raise it. Spacing down is cheap and if the new height works, it costs you nothing. If it works and you are still curious, you still got another 1/2"- 2" left that you can go up with different combinations of a shorty lower and spacers.
