New to offshore

I bought a 1984 Formula 272 this summer! Love it! Does anyone know what I should be getting for a top speed? I've reached 57mph at 4000 rpm with 2 people and 3/4 tank of fuel! 23p ss props

Crude Intentions 01-03-2013 12:02 PM

350s alpha drives? I have a 272sr1 which I believe is same hull and with 350s alphas turnin 21s @ 4700 I avg 58-60 in florida heat with a best of 63 once. GPS speeds.

befu 01-03-2013 02:03 PM

If 350's are stock your top will be around 60. Usually 21p props, maybe 23 depending on what type blades. Sounds like you are a little over propped with you rpm. (The above is knowledge gained from others on this site from me asking questions as I have only run my 272 3 times so far, all just for testing)

How many hours on engines? Stock? Where you located?

Brian

84 Formula 272 01-03-2013 02:23 PM

Not really sure on engine hours they were rebuilt in late 2010 the are 350ci 260hp not sure what the did when the were rebuilt she runs really well!! I think you might be right about over propped. It's like a rev limiter runs right up to 4000 and that's it!! Gets out of the hole and on plane fine, no hesitation and sounds good!! Doesn't sound like it's lugging around at all! Oh the props are quicksilver 3 blade cleaners!! I haven't ever tested her with an empty tank!! I don't want to fill it when it's on EMPTY!!! lol

84 Formula 272 01-03-2013 02:26 PM

Oh Thanks alot for the reply!! It's cool to talk to people who have similar old boats!!! Formula's are amazing old boats!!!!

84 Formula 272 01-03-2013 02:42 PM

I am in the Kansas city area.

84 Formula 272 01-03-2013 04:48 PM

I would post a picture but not sure how to do that.

84 Formula 272 01-04-2013 12:30 PM

More questions!! Is there any storage under my cuddy cabin couches?

Crude Intentions 01-04-2013 12:44 PM

None under mine. Just lift the cushions see if you have a hatch to open.

84 Formula 272 01-04-2013 01:15 PM

The couches look like they should open from the top seems like there would be lots of storage under there but I can't figure out how to open them!!

84 Formula 272 01-04-2013 01:21 PM

What is the difference in the LS and the SR1 ? Besides the windshield.

The cabin couches do not open. There is two stringers in each one, the one one the outside you see and another one inboard about 9 inches. They are capped with plywood that is "kinda" glassed together. Some holes are drilled in the top piece of wood and the cavaties are filled with expanding foam that does a wonderful job of holding moisture. That is then covered with the carpet liner and the cushions put on top. No storage underneath. (This all assumes your 84 is the same as my 86, which I think they would be.)

You can see some wonderful details in my rebuild thread on the center stringer, both front and rear fuel tank bulkheads and the forward stringers. Under the formula section, just sort by replies or views and you will find my thread on the first page.

Good luck, Brian

I believe the bottom hull mold is the same. The top is different. Four vents instead of one, rounded windshield, shaping all the back, dashboard and the interior.

Brian

Thanks Brian I've looked at those couches several nights with beer in hand pondering the storage area to be had!!! Lmao you must have a real project with your boat?

u mean 5k don't ya? welcome.

Mr Maine 01-04-2013 07:16 PM

On my formula (different boat I know) with my 23 and 1.5:1 I am running about 52gps at 4000 so I assumed either tachs off or speed was off the speedo.

I look forward to seeing some pics, I love the old formulas...

84 Formula 272 01-05-2013 02:53 PM

4000 rpm running 23p 3 blade Quicksilver SS cleavers. Gps and speedometer have been off and on within 2mph up to 45 cruising. Did not gps the 57mph will have to wait till summer to try that again! But tachs still won't go above 4000 when running wot ! they seem to be fine if I trim to far tach goes up speed starts to go down!! I don't know what gear ratio is on lower units! Also have engin synchronizer lights to keep them matched at same rpm! Maybe just pushing to much weight for horsepower to prop ratio?

I had a 86 272 with the same issue. I sold it,guy that baught it said he replaced the throttle cables due to stretching,,,,, Said he picked up about 800rpm with new cables. I would think you could adjust this at carbs???

84 Formula 272 01-07-2013 10:04 AM

I will look at that whenever this cold weather goes away! Thank you very much!!

I hate winter!!!!!!!!! Lol

Pull the flame arresters, advance the throttles and see if they open all the way. Easy.

I also adjusted mine sothey both hit the secondaries at the same time and marked it on the throttles, just so I know where they start to open up.

84 Formula 272 01-10-2013 10:59 AM

Thanks !!!
There are hardly any Formula boats around our area!! She gets lots of looks and plenty of questions about her age!! Most people can't believe how well they are built!!! The quality of work in these old boats is amazing!!!!!! She rides so well !!!!

86242ls 01-10-2013 11:29 AM

Nice boat!!!! its identical to my dads 302 minus the side windows and bbc, was this the one for sale in Missouri?

84 Formula 272 01-10-2013 01:45 PM

Yes it was at Lake of the Ozarks. I saw a picture of your dads boat on another thread WOW his boat looks perfect!!!!

pgolder 01-15-2013 03:08 PM

hey guys quick question about the 272 sbc boats it looks like JETTDOG's prop's turn to the right. now on my 311 the turn out. Does this matter for his perfomance?

Mr Maine 01-15-2013 07:37 PM

The props on this 272 are both right handed as they didn't counter rotate props on alphas (was available at a later time and can be retro-fitted).

The props on a 311 (whether trs or bravo) should counter rotate which is desirable because the counter rotation helps cancel torque steer. I believe they typically turn them out on the older formulas, some boats are faster turning in but depends on the hull

84 Formula 272 01-21-2013 02:17 PM

This cold weather sucks!!!! It warmed up to 59 Saturday so I pulled the tarp a bit popped the top on a cold one and had a beer in the boat!!! Lol

84 Formula 272 01-21-2013 02:25 PM
