I am going to make one this winter that will be similiar to a Cig. Top Gun. That way I will have some place to put extra guages and also indicators. The look is something like this I wonder if your boat is close enough to mine???? I know that Chart and some one else wanted to go that way. I can just make a mold and make a few I guess maybe. I have never done it before but I am getting quite handy with the glass over the last few months.
Oh well can not get the image in so hear is a link to the page.

The 311 has the rounded windshield, and a square fairing may look odd on it. My .02. Didn't formula use an alum. fairing that looked just like the glass windshield?

Audio: We're thinking the same type of thing, but I planned on bringing the "wing" back to the indentions where the current windshild stops. The Cig's wings don't taper back as far. These will look good. Is it better to build a mold rather than construct the fairing from the inside out, finishing with west system and painting?

Chart I am going back to the original window stop location as well Not sure what you mean by build from the inside out??? Most all parts built that are this size will be done with a mold. I will be building mine with either polyester and glass or hopefully paying my budy to spray it with his Chopper gun. Then I will spray it with Gel coat. Paint in that area of a boat is in my opinion not strong enough. I will constantly scratch it with sand and stuff. Well not me, but my passangers of course

What I meant was the difference between having a mold like the boat mfgers have, where the gel coat is added first, and forms the outer-most layer of the finished part, and then the inside supports are added, etc. vs. the way I would have to do myself: build the "stringer system" for the fairing, cover it with a thin skin, followed by fiberglass, and then the outer-most coat.

I've never sprayed gel coat, but from reading some posts here, sounds like strong paint (maybe epoxy) would be overall better. I'm just muddeling through this, and hope the "learning oportunities" are not too many or painful.

yes I guess you can do it either way. The mold will allow for multiple coppies to be made VS. your way that will only allow for one copy. I would guess there is not much of a difference as to one being better then the other.

Please understand, I'm not suggesting my method is better, just the method that is within my abilities (almost!).

How are molds made? Is a prototype (possitive) made first, and then a mold (negitive) cast from it? Or is there another method?

Not sure how this will be done. I am going to try and catch my buddy the glass guy and have him explain the best way to do it.
