Default Oil recommendations for older 454?

We have an '89 223ss running a 454 non-mag and I'm wondering what oil weight we should be running. Temps here are from 70-90 degrees and we mostly idle through the river and cruise about 2800rpm but also the ocassionaly run some 5 minute WOT runs. The motor has 380 hours on it and runs great just want to start doing my own maintenance on it to save some cash. We only put about 20 hours on a year max, mostly sit at the sandbar and hang out.

I use Mobil 1 15-50 syn in my 454 with good results, good price at walmar. With only 380 hours you have a long way to go on that engine.

I would run something with zinc for the cam and lifters. Today's engine dont need it so the oils don't come with it.

Use the 15-50 Mobile 1 but swap a quart for bottle of Lucas oil enhancer. It has friction reducing additives in it including zinc and molybdenum for that flat tappet cam.

Nice looking rig BTW...bet its a bullet!!

I use Valvoline VR1 racing 20-50 for many years in my 336.

X2 on the penn or joe Gibbs race oil. Mobil 1 has very little zinc, and if run in that engine without a zinc phosphor additive you'll have a flat cam and mushroomed lifters very soon
