Considering channging my 242SS to a 271 Sr1
3 Attachment(s)
Today I have been looking at a very special and nice 271 SR1
It is modernized and customized when it comes to paint and interior, looking very sharp from my point of wiew The boat has a 509 with a Whiple supercharger doing aprox 850 HP, I am not going to have that engine I am not a mechanic. The boat has bravo Xr drive with shower, and Latham hydraulic steering bigger trim flaps, and a lot of other upgrades. All interior are new, made of Alcantara fabric, very popular to use in boats in Europe. Customized dash with new Livorsi Mega gauges, electric toilet flush shower on the swim platform, The idea is to buy the boat without the engine, and install my 502 Mercruiser blue engine aprox 540 hp So anyone with experience of the 271 Sr1 ?? Are there a big difference between the 242 hull and the 271 hull ?? All info will be highly appreciated BR Rune |

You might actually find that their is less room in the 271 verse the 242ss, when I had my 242 ls I compared it in size with my buddy's 271 fast tech and they were practically the same size he might have had 6 inches to a 1ft on me From bow to stern. Cockpit area was pretty much the same between both boats.

The cockpit place in The 242 is mouch bigger then most other Formulas I think you need to compare 353 or 382
To have The same or bigger :-) |
Hi Sam (88242LS)
Closing in on this deal now :-) I am sure you have a lot of info regarding both 242 and 271, owning both of them ;-) I would really appreciate as much info as possible about the benefits and disadvantage by moving up to a mint 271 SR1 :-) All info about the 271 will also be of interest BR Rune |
I had a Whippled 271 Fastech, XR drive, Hyd. steering, with a 26 Bravo 1 ran 78-80.

Thanks Sam
I know everything about the cockpit space in the 242SS and absolutely enjoyed it. I have consider it that 90 % of the time spent on the boat, we are less then 4 people. I have finally decided to not consider the cockpit space in the 271 as a big issue. I am not keen on bolsters, so the flip up seats is perfect. The design of the 271 is in my eyes timeless, one of the best looking boats under 30 feet :-). I also know the guy who owns this boat, and have had the pleasure to follow the 2 year rebuilding process. There are no issues what so ever with the boat, and as mentioned before it has a lot of upgrades For me to buy a bigger performance boat with two engines are not an option. The decision is to continue upgrading my 242 SS or buy a newer and more modern single engine boat like this one. Of course there are other brands Donzi, Sunsation etc, but I am a Formula man...he he. Fountain is not my favourite, just mention it ;-). As earlier mentioned the plan is to install my blue 502 540 hp engine. Based on what I seen in several threads the top speed should be some where between 65 - 70 mph. I can live with that ;-) I have read that it seems that the 271 is really slow to get on plane, is that also your experience Sam? |
Never horsed mine out of the whole, slow? compared to what? yes with 4 adults, full tank of fuel, I guess so, not gonna pull a skier real well, tube is fine,

Ok guys then we have reached an agreement, the deal is done. Next summer this Formula 271 SR 1 will be my ride :-)
The hart of the boat will be blue, 502 540 Hp connected to the water with a Bravo 1 XR drive. Looking toward to summer 2015 :-) |
Monaco, congrats on the boat, I have ridden on a 271 and they are nice boats. I noticed the K-planes are placed horizontal, did the previous owner do this, maybe to help with chine walk at high speed with the blower?
Also, I noticed the transom of the boat extends well past the last rollers, this is not good for the hull and should be fixed (you may know this, but I just wanted to mention it) Again, enjoy the boat, and the way it is strapped down, it looks ready for some high speed off roading behind the truck (Just playing haha) |
Thanks Mr Main
You are right, the K planes are placed horizontal to help the chine walk , which happens with the 271 SR1 when you reach 70+ mph, and it helps. :-) I did not buy the trailer, but do you really think that this is a problem, in Norway most boats are transported like this :-/ I hope that I will reach a top speed between 65 - 67 mph :-) |
The boat does 85 mph with the current blower engine :-) so the K- planes are needed :-)
|
Haha, I bet that is a ride at 85, and I'm sure those horizontal kplanes are put to use at those speeds.
With 540 horse you should be close to if not over 70mph. Without support to the transom, a hook can develop creating a concave area in front of the transom which affects handling and top speed. I'm surprised that is common over your way, as here in the states you don't see that unless it is just a temporary trailer or something. |
We have very strange rules for trailers in Europe especially Norway.
Imagine hydraulic brakes are not allowed ???? The weight at the tow bar must not be more then 150 pounds ?? The width on the trailer need to be less then 2,5 meters = 6,5 feet. wider trailers are registrant end as special transport etc... So it is ... |

Interesting article about 271 SR1 502 415 Bravo1 Top speed 63 mph :-) Fantastic numbers after rebuilt, I did not know the 271 had that speed potential :-) Look forward to summer to test my boat with 560 Hp
enjoy:-) :-) https://books.google.no/books?id=R0P...epage&q&f=true |

Pretty okay read, but I could have done without the author's commentary.
Would have been nice to know what they used for parts, but I guess that's their secret. |

Would have been nice to know what they used for parts, but I guess that's their secret. Never saw any speed close 76 - 77 with that 540 HP I have seen some 271 Fastec done 72 - 72 mph with Merc Racing 525 ...:-) |
Nothing wrong at all with spinning the 502 that high. The bottom-end is certainly strong enough to handle it.
I can't really say too much in regard to the setup. I don't know the 271 at all, and being fairly new to Formula it's hard for me to say what it would take to run "xx" mph. It was definitely moving though! I know I have my work cutout for me with my 242, but that's what superchargers are for! |
I noticed the author got the pitch and diameter backwards in the article, haha. Definitely a healthy motor to push it to 76, although its an old article and they were talking about the speedometer so I assume it's not GPS speed. If so, may have been closer to 70mph GPS?

I use hydromotive p5x prop 24p with 525 efi ,helped with getting on plane and staying on plane at slow speed.Top end speed still good 68 gps carrying lots of fuel and cargo.
