400SS weight on trailer

Has anyone who trailers a 400SS ever weighed it on the trailer?

rexcramer1 09-04-2015 10:00 AM

No, but I can tell it will not be fun at all towing it with a 3/4 ton GMC. Minimum 1 ton dually territory there, really should have a 4500 or 5500.

jbraun2828 09-04-2015 10:01 AM

Should be about 21k on a steel trailer. My buddy has one and is bringing it to Cumberland next week. Guy hauling will be stopping at scales so we will know exact weight next week

jbraun2828 09-04-2015 10:06 AM

Also his is 13' 4" high without the radar and almost 11 feet wide so you need a wide load permit

glboatdriver 09-04-2015 11:39 AM

Thanks. I have a storage guy with a bigger, manlier truck to do the hauling. In the past I've had the storage guy drop the boat and trailer at the marina parking lot so I can work on it, then I launch it, retrieve it and leave it there for him to haul again.

Kinda wondered if I wanted to launch and retrieve a 400SS on a gooseneck trailer with the Denali.

rexcramer1 09-04-2015 03:47 PM

If you have a real good launch that is not too steep you could probably pull it off. That's what low range is for lol. I pulled a buddies Sea Ray out that was full of fuel and sinking due to a failed stringer, so it had to be 16-17k with the water and my 3/4 Cummins pulled her out. Turbo sounded like a jet engine lol because I was in such a hurry I forgot to use low range

Thanks! Do you have radar arch, hardtop, etc?

rak rua 09-04-2015 08:57 PM

I'm not familiar with truck sizes in the U.S. but if you attempt to tow with a Suburban 2500, you'll look something like this.....(thread page 60, post number 1189).

The guy was criticized by a couple for being overweight but he did explain his towing habits in the post.

Holy Crap! That sure is a whole lotta boat on a trailer, makes the Suburban look tiny.

Thanks.

The Mrs was on the internet looking at 400SSs all the way home from the marina today. Give me two or three years and I bet we'll have one. Might be able to do it with the Denali (11 miles to the ramp from storage) but the storage guy can do it for us also.

pat@osp 09-06-2015 02:37 PM

We LOVE ours. Great boat and a good compromise between speed and comfort. We are out on it right now.........and I've been trolling the web all afternoon looking at newer ones with diesels and a hardtop :)

glboatdriver 09-06-2015 04:15 PM

I'd love the disels also. Not sure we're ready for teh hart top yet, but you never know.

The search is part of the fun.

What's the bridge clearance with the 400ss in the water? Thanks

MrCIG 09-10-2015 08:33 PM

Just towed one from Lake St.Clair Mi to Chicago on an aluminum manning trailer. Towed great behind an F350 with 7.3 diesel. With 4:10 gear. 7.3mpg at 60mph

That had to look good going down the road!. Single rear wheel or dually? Tagalong, gooseneck or fifth-wheel?

Bridge clearance in the water is 12' If you fold down the anchor light (quick release pin) 11'. We bought a 2005 400SS with 350 D-6 volvos this may. We are doing the east coast from detroit through the erie canal, hudson, new york, delaware, chesapeake, ICW south. We are now in Savanna. GREAT boat. Perfect for 2, too small for 4..Gets 2.4 mpg at 30 mph. Runs 50, its really happy at 30-35.

Fossil we hope you are documenting this trip. I know a thread on here with pics and detail will help get me through this winter.

Towed out to the storage building for the winter

A sad day, indeed! We put ours to bed for the winter last week with about 38 hours of use this year. That's about average for us with this boat.

What receiver hitch are you using? If I do a tag-a-long trailer I'll need to upgrade a bit from the factory one.

I might use a receiver hitch and pintle draw bar since my storage guy can haul a pintle for me if needed.

It's a Class V Titan Solid adjustable draw bar with 2 5/16 ball

glboatdriver 10-09-2015 10:42 AM

Thanks MrCIG. I'll have to replace the stock hitch with a Titan, if for no other reason than it is a bad azz looking hitch

The stock hitch definitely has to go. My 419 is not the same weight as your 400 but it is was still over the factory hitch rating.
I installed a CURT mfg 2 1/2" receiver hitch and got a forged draw bar and ball for an 18,000 lb rating. As a "15" model truck you may have the 2 1/2 receiver then you just need the rest of the parts for higher tow rating. My "06" Duramax only had the 2" receiver rated at 12.000 which was a joke for a DRW 3500.
