The silent thunder exhaust cuts in the transom are in the standard bravo locations. Formula used a tip very similar to what you would find on a jet boat, extending about 2" outside, then it is open in the platform for exhaust to find its way to the platforms side rectangle tips.

That's plenty loud. Might leave it on.
Cool so remove the darn thing, put some tops on, build a nice teak deck and fill the old holes. Seems simple enough.
I fixed the link.

That is merely an example. How loud this is depends on what Tom has for engine! I bet nowhere near stock. If you don't want the platform there are many options to reduce the volume with straight exhaust. Internal mufflers, external mufflers, in-line mufflers, switchable mufflers, turn downs. It only take an hour and three gorillas to remove platform start it up and see what you think. Also a good time to inspect for rot around mounting holes and back of platform.
And to note... my 242 is far from stock. You can check out my thread here: http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/f...ess-242-a.html |
I have a tractor so removal shouldn't be too bad. The man that owned it and had all the engine work done Is a boat fanatic and perfectionist from what the current owner says. They are close friends. Fanatic owner got in a financial bind and his friend bought it. Anyhow. He said he went from front to back inspecting the stringers, bulkhead, and transom. He removed the platform and checked for rot, he assures me with 100 certainty there isn't rot in this boat. He resealed all the bolt holes when the platform went back on. This boat has lived in a heated and cooled metal building.

Nice looking ride, as some have said it is a Bravo looking at the pics. Leave the platform on and cut some of the baffles out inside the platform to give you some sound. Have a survey done, but it does look nice ride. You are getting some very good advise here thats what OSO great.

I couldn't agree more. You guys have been very helpful and informative. I frequent an offroad forum and have gained friends all over the country and even across the world due to it. This forum seems to be the same way. Full of great folks that don't mind sharing their knowledge.

Here is another. 1987 does not specify if Alpha or Bravo

I believe I'll be in this blue one for 10 or less if it goes correctly. And it's much closer to home lol. If it falls through I'll check that one out. I bet it will get into the 60s with a 496 in it?
I have a hull with the hooks removed. My boat with a 420hp went 62. I now make 550hp after heat has soaked in, I get 72-73.
I want reliable over fast. I have a vector to go fast in. I want to cruise about 35-40. If a wot run is 55 I'd be happy. He claims it will do 65 but I imagine he is basing that off the speedometer ln the dash not gps numbers.

Block Code is mc43014. Decoder says mc was a 69 model 427?
Where are you getting that code from?
Front of block to left of timing cover.
That's not right.
If it is a MK-IV, the pad is directly above the timing cover on a flat, machined pad along the top of the gasket sealing surface for the timing cover. If it's a Gen V or VI, it's on a pad just forward of the cylinder head on the left side (if you're looking at the front of the engine). The number you got is probably part of a VIN. |
That's a MK-IV block. Ask him to send you a pick taken directly above the front of the engine (focusing on the timing cover).
Hey 79, what prop do you run?
In the picture, the pad with the identifier is under the electrical cable that's running across the top.
Thanks Tom I'll get him to go take more pictures
You're welcome!
He says he can't see any other numbers. Oh well.
Mercruiser ID tag is on the rear of the block above the bellhousing.

Right now I have a 25p mirage plus. I think I am going to swap to a 24p 4 blade though. |

I just talked to Bob Grissom (might have spelled it wrong) the engine builder. He was very kind and very helpful. He relayed to me this information.
It was an original 454 block He bored it 100 over he said which makes it a 476 cubic inch block. He used pistons with about 100 thousands dome they have a compression ratio of about 9.75. It is indeed a flat tappet cam shaft but does have roller rockers. He said it is a factory gm 454cu 450hp cam shaft. He said the engine is precision balanced, he put a little aluminum intake on it. Ran it on the test stand over an hour to check it all out before it left. All in all he said it should be around 425 hp or so the way it is. Hotter fuel and more timing might squeeze more from it but it simply a reliable engine as it is now. |

The interior and dash look very clean. I would clean the outside, the bilge, and tidy up the wiring. That would cost almost $0. I would look at it and try to strike a deal.

That is certainly the plan tom. I looked up those thumper risers, they come in about $1500, then the $3500 engine. I feel it will be a good one to get if I can get it around 10. The seller seems to be a very nice man, he wants me to wait until he is home in a 2 weeks to come get it that way he can take me for a ride on it rather than his son. He has taken very good care of it but is moving out west soon so liquidating some toys.

Tom how do you feel about this boat having a 19p 4blade? Does that seem a fuzz on the small side if it's an honest 425 hp ?

According to the numbers on it it's a 19. Do these bravo drives run the same spline as regular merc outboards ?
Alphas, bravos, and trs all run the same prop. I would assume the larger OBs as well.
Hmm. I have a 26, 28, and 30 chopper I could bogg it down with if that is the case.
