ok, I’ve been reading through the formula section and came across a thread where someone mentions using a 96-99 5.7 Vortec in a boat. I can’t find the thread now. (Of course). Anyway, would it be possible to put a vortec in a boat with all of the EFI stuff? I realize it would need a 02 sensor in the riser. I really miss my EFI and the motors are very reasonable. Maybe a cam swap for a few more hp. I could either mod the harness or buy a stand alone. Brass freeze plugs of course. I boat in fresh water BTW
Maybe be a dumb idea but if I didn’t ask I wouldn’t know the answer.

No idea is dumb unless you dont ask about it. Basically your saying you want to put a pickup truck engine in your boat. The mpi engines are vortec engines with a different intake and cam set up. You say you miss efi. I ask why? I often have the thought I'd like to put an efi set up on my engine. But when I run it I remember why a simple carburetor is so effective and less hassle.

Unless you run a dry exhaust, you wont be able to keep an o2 sensor long. The moisture will eat them up. You'll constantly be changing them. If you want efi. Go with the mpi set up. I personally do not like them, but as you said different strokes.

I have a 7.4 in my 243 that is fuel injected. It sucks in my opinion. To much to go wrong that the older MEFI cant catch. I am going back to a carb to get the power the motor should have back. You can put a truck vortec in but you'll have more money into making it work then just buying a used merc 350mpi. They are out there and will bolt up and plug in. This way it has all the marine distributor and appropriate marine accessories

They don't pump excess fuel into the air they put it back into the carb. Plus all things are meant for the water. Spend the money and buy a marine carb. Personally I like Holley. But if I had to choose I would get the factory Rochester for a 350 mag. Smaller primaries and when the secondaries open it has a little more punch with the spread bore. Just my .02
