Remove your throttle linkage so you can do it all from the engine area, Pre set your light to what you want 32 - 34 rev it up get it done as fast as possible. Tighten up the distributor and re check, check idle and note for future.

I was able to do it with the fuel filter there. Taking the pulley off made a decent amount of room but it’s still pretty tight in there. I did take off the top bar and the sliding doors under the hatch so I could lay down. I’m 6’4” so that doesn’t help. All in all I think it took me about 3 hours but I’ve never done it before |
Gary summed it up pretty well. I ran a v8-24 but it popped out. I run a v8-22 now because I have it. Would prefer a v8-24 or v8hp. But set your base timing as Gary suggests. I run 33° all in just to be safe. Detonation is not a good thing and anything over 34 your at risk.

Another update. Took the boat out today. Went down an inlet that has a fast zone. Didn’t want to go too far on the first run. Went well. Made it home. Lol. Have to do plugs and wires and fine tune timing. Had a hard time getting on plane and couldn’t get rpms over 2800 but temp and oil pressure were great. Had a hard time seeing the timing mark but thought I had it at 10 but all in all had a great first trip!!!!! My wife and I went up and down the river for a couple hours. 45 minutes each way out to the ocean. Plugs and wires this week and find a better timing light for the final tune |
Mark the proper timing marks with a white paint pen to make it easy.

Do yourself a favor and flush the engine for atleast 10 minutes with fresh water after every single trip. You will destroy that engine leaving salt in it.
