Default 500 efi 530 hp

Out of the water after my 502 broke. Installed a 496 HO ;-)

Having fun in the Oslo Fjord

All time high 3 people in the boat and 1/4 full tank :-)

Hi Guys
Soon season the starts up north Europe as well

I have a 271 SR1 with a 2009 496 HO aprox 250 hours, doing 63,6 mph (gps) this was with my old XR drive (installed new Bravo1 X drive last season)
Considering change to 500 EFI completely rebuild, benched to 530 HP 0 hours
What kind of increase in, acceleration, cruising speed and top speed ?
I really like the 496 HO, no issues closed cooling etc.. The 500 do not have closed cooling, said that the boat has a seastrainer and possibility for flushing the engine

I am happy for any feedback, comments and information

Regards from Norway

I guess it all depends on cost and reliability. Your 496 runs well with little hours (it'll go 1k plus hours with general maintenance). The 500 EFI will need valve springs at 250 hours. Will also need good exhaust.

We always want to go faster. I'm in the same situation, but I try to practice restraint. I have the funds to build a very fast 311, but I'm also getting to the point where I'd rather not have to work on it all the time (boating on the water is much better than boating on land!).

Only you can answer the question on what it's worth to you. How did the HP 500 set up run in the boat before?

I’d stay with the 496 myself unless you want to go big power like a 540 and new drive package, otherwise I don’t think the juice is worth the squeeze. Possibly rebuild the 496 with forged internals for the possibility of adding a supercharger?

100 hp will make a lot of difference in acceleration cruise and top speed. I would guess 70 top end. You should be able to put the closed cooling system back on the 500, no? I can’t dissuade you from doing this because I just pulled a perfectly good 502 out of my boat to add a more powerful engine. Good luck

Hi
Thank you for replying :-)

Here in Norway the 496 HO are a very popular engine, I think I will sell it very easy and get well paid
Its a well know local engine shop who are selling the engine and done the rebuild, I know them and I
got a very good price on the 500 EFI, so it will not be big money between selling and buying…
I thought the service interval on a 500 EFI are aprox 300 hours +++ ?? I am not an expert so maybe I am wrong
This 500 EFI have 530 HP so the exta 100 HP should get the boat close to 70 mph +/-
It has original exhaust/headers

Regarding my old engine the 502 dynoed to 560 HP, never worked good in my boat and had a complete breakdown before I had the chance
to test it... So I really do not know … only tried it once and it did 67 mph.. with out being 100% and not an Ideal propeller

I have been thinking of adding a Raylar kit to my 496, it gives 530 HP, It will actually cost more inluding kit + work then
selling my 496 HO and buying the 500 EFI

But it is an option :-)

The engine before the rebuild and upgrade
Hi
Thank you for replying
With my current set up, I am running a Bravo1 24 best overall performance, 62 mph top end. Its my 3 blade Mirage plus 23`who
did the 63,6 mph top end speed. I hope if I buy this 500 EFI I should be able to spin Bravo1 26` and a Mirage plus 25`,
if I can not reach 70 mph I will be disapointed
