Question on Trim/Pumps
Hello!
So, in testing out the 87 272 SR1 that I recently purchased, I overlooked checking out he trim function. It seemed okay in the water, but the left side unit raises and lowers MUCH more slowly than the right side. I was told to check the pump for fluid first, but I don't know where it is located. I saw one reservoirhttps://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...43ab398af0.jpg on the left rear corner, but my friend assures me that is not for the trim, or that there should be another one if it is. Can ya'all tell me where to look for this? Thanks! John |
If you are talking about the trim tabs that is a Bennett pump and only 1 pump activates both. It uses ATF as fluid.
If you are talking about the Drive Trim that is a bigger motor and 1 per drive and uses light weight motor oil as fluid. Welcome to Formula. |
I meant Drive Trims. I cant see the reservoirs.

Looks like below pic and usually (not always) mounted on floor in each (if 2 drives) corner of engine compartment.

And I want to check the fluid level when these are fully down, correct?

The pumps are on the transom usually behind the battery boxes and you may have a clogged pickup screen. It’s in the fluid reservoir on the bottom of the pump. I would clean the tank and replace fluid while it’s apart if this is the problem. Good luck. |

Okay, Guys. I removed my engine cover to clean some things up last night, and I located the trim pumps. They do not look like the one pictured above. I took the best photos I could. Can you guys give me some advice on these?
I am assuming the screw I see is a filler/dipstick. I don't see a visible way to determine fluid level, or a spot for a filter/screen. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a497316257.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...976663c765.jpg |
And just to be clear, the pump works, but that side is WAY slower than the other.
Is there a reason each drive is on a separate switch? I assumed to help adjust the way the boat rides, but I thought the trim tabs or K planes would do that? Thank you! J |
