Engine Hatch Mirrors
 

Hey Formula Dudes,
Mirrors under my hatch look like crap. Water has seeped in and deteriorated the finish on the back side of the mirrors. Took them out in anticipation of refinish or replacement. Anybody done this before? Where do you go to get them refinished? Is replacement just as cheap? BTW, they are plexiglass. Thanks guys.

Did mine three years ago:cool: . Went to a glass and mirror supply...they had mirrored plexiglass just like what was there.
Gave them mine for patterns and guides for holes. Cost about $40 each. Two years later they were starting to look like $hit again:mad: .
I think it's being right over the heat from the engines:confused:

Although I believe there's a number of catalogers that offer mirrored plexiglass sheet that you might be able to track down online, I just looked in the B2B yellow pages under Plastics and found a local guy who I give the exact dimensions and had it made to fit.

If I remember correctly, it was less than $100, which included predrilled mounting holes that almost lined up ;^) and large oval holes for the air cleaners. It came out perfect.

Thanks for the info. Price wise, it sounds pretty good but I'm bummed to here about it not lasting too long Mo. Actually, I think the mirrors are kind of goofy with stock engines like mine. Not too much to show off in there. But, its an original part of the boat so I guess I'll do them over and make 'em look good again.

Are you sure that you don't have water leaking onto the backsides of the mirrorplex? That might aggravate it..

Yeah......when installing them again, I would run a bead of clear silicone behind, and around all the mounting holes too so that no moisture gets back there.

Phatom is that really a good idea? Wouldn't it be better to space it up a little so you can get air back there? I would be afraid that if you silicone and water did get back there it would lbe trapped?

I was wondering if you had any updates on your 302 project? I was following that threat on the Tech forum, but it kind of died out. Being a former '79 302 SE owner, I'm real interested in how that comes out. How about some updates!

Don't use Silicone, it will destroy the Mirrored finish.
The plexi comes in different thickness. The thinner the plexi, the more flex, the quicker it will degrade.
Unless you have an exact templet as to where themounting holes are You might want to drill them yourself.
Drill slow, and with a drill bit that the rake has been groundoff.
Been doing this for years.
