Default ‘89 272 SR1 stern light replacement

I’m having an issue replacing the stern light socket on a 272 SR1.
i tried to remove the 3 screws and just one backed out -but only 75%-
finally cracked and removed the socket ... the 3 screws are apparently machine screws and are fastened underneath with nuts and washers.
problem is there is no access from below to hold the nuts firm to remove the screws and replace with a new socket.

is this typical ? Under that spot in the engine compartment is the halon bottle.
and what appears to be a bulkhead.... if I cut the screws off and let them
fall in , they may rattle around forever more.
thanks in advance

My 242 and 311 were screwed into the fiberglass. Are you sure they’re machine screws?

yes
as a of this moment I have solved the removal issue.
cut the screws with a hacksaw and caught the bottom nut and shaft with some gorilla tape.

now the replacement socket I bought is too big for the spot... hangs 1 1/2” Over the back lip...
marvelous

Are you able to find any part numbers or name on the original piece. I remember I had a similar issue with my bow light. After some searing online I found a direct replacement for the one that came from the factory.

I just went through this on my 91, it was a complete pita. There is access from the side of the bulkhead to get an extended box wrench in there to catch the nut and have someone else run the bolt out from the topside.

The stern light base you are looking for is made by Aqua Signal and replacements are still available. The part number is Aqua Signal 20700-7 Series 20. I purchased mine on eBay.

There was very little slack to work with on the wires from the topside but it is possible. If it weren’t for the small profile of the bulkhead I would have installed a larger, more durable perko stainless unit but there simply isn’t room.

Good luck I hope this helps!
