New to me 1991 272 SR1
After a few years without my 223LS I got the bug again and started looking. Found this 91 in AL about two months ago and have been bringing it back to life. Lots of deferred maintenance but nothing crazy. Last bit I’m working on is a complete lack of panel lights?
Anyways the hour meter reads 600 and I think that’s accurate. Always freshwater. Right now it spins to 4200 with 25 Mirages... wondering if new ignition components will help that. Someone also converted it to electric fuel pumps and the whole setup seems anemic... will probably swap your Holley reds or blues during the off season. I don’t think many of these were built with magnums? Coming from the 223 with a single 454/330 this boat is very dependent and sensitive to tab input. Still learning but having fun. Also I forgot just how silent the ST platform was! https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b9e0a05587.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...d4292f9d13.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...ae2e42e052.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...d6efd673f0.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...4a44fa9b81.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...785547bad8.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...74195c7ca8.jpg |
Wow that looks awesome. Hope you get lots of worry free use.
|
Damn clean looking boat. I’m always amazed at the care people take with these old birds.
|
Thats the nicest color. I would put 23 mirage plus props on. 👍

What’s the top speed of a 271 with mags. My 330’s runs 67 with a little fuel.
|
Beautiful boat 👍🏻
|
Are you trimming it up good at wide open? I had a 272 with 330s and spun 25 mirages to 4400 and 64 to 65 mph. With mags you should be spinning them faster than that.
|
Beautiful boat
|
Ran it for a bit yesterday. Does anyone know what the 454 mag is rated for WOT? I’ve read conflicting info online. I spun the 25 Mirage to about 4200 yesterday and that was 64mph. Light chop two adults and a full tank of fuel. Wondering how that would compare to mirage plus 23 at around 4800?

One of my all time favorite designs!
Gorgeous. Congrats and enjoy! |

Something is off here, you should be getting some more RPMs out of the Mags. Usually 4800-5000 depending on conditions and props. Bone stock, I would think 4800 RPM should be the target.
|
My 25 mirage on a twin 330 272 gets me 4600 maybe 47 with a super lite load at 67. I thought about trying to get 5000 out of it but they have 900 hours on stock motors with good compression and super low oil consumption so I don’t want to push my luck ha.

Can't help with the question but where are you? We need to get the twins together.

Getting all the little things fixed. Dash light switch was bad and the brand new Sierra water temp sending unit was bad out of the box! Going to get a stereo upgrade in the next couple of weeks at which point I will probably also be modifying the ST box for some more noise. The mags sound like V6's currently.

That means you can sneak up on people lol . It doesn’t get a little louder once water drains out on plane or do you mean when docking? I can’t hear my boat with stereo cranked and wind in hair either but I’m sure others can . I’d love to go for a ride in one of these bigger formulas but then I’d be to motivated to buy one

Let’s see some fly by vids please
|
Don't have any flybys but here is the boat running about 60 from the pax seat...

Ya video taken from the helm usually just the wind sound effects. I have no idea what mine sounds like except from my father in law “ your boat is loud” when he heard it from shore

You should be at least 48 - 5000 rpm with the Mags. You might want to Lab your 25s and turn them into 24s, this should still help you not lose as much of your cruise speed as you will going to 23s but help you pull higher rpm on the top end. If you haven't given it a complete tune up I would do that before I did anything with the props. Make sure when you are testing props that you are always at the same trim level trim level, prop shafts parallel with the bottom of the boat. Run a straight edge off the bottom and line up the shaft, then note where it is on your drive indicator.
As far as the sound goes, I have always taken off the rubber flaps and cut the baffles out of the swim platform. You can go in from the back where the flaps where with the biggest hole saw that will fit or long saw blade. The baffle is very thin and cuts out very easy. Gives you a much nicer sound without being real loud. F14A Water Jet's 311, the one that said it is a twin to yours' is one of my old boats. I cut the baffles out of that one when I bought it new, Sounded must better. |

I just did new fuel filters, plugs, wires, caps, rotors and thermostats on both engines along with adjusting both throttle cables for WOT (both needed adjustment, port moreso at it seemed to be missing the last 10% or so). Plan is to drop it back in the water tomorrow for another shakedown and see where I’m at. |

I have the boat on the trailer right now and actually cut the baffles out yesterday. I also added four 2” drain holes on the bottom side of the platform (one under each exhaust path).

Boat got a full service including new throttle and shift cables over the winter as well as new Holley fuel pumps and new fuel lines. The fittings on the stbd side were anemic. I swapped on a pair of Mirage 23’s from a buddy’s boat and the difference is night and day. Jumps out of the hole, accelerates much stronger, and runs right at 4800rpm with a full load. One of the new throttle cables needed adjustment, got that straightened out and can’t wait to run it again. Thinking it will be around 65mph with a full tank and two adults, not sure where that will put me on fumes. The 23’s seem to lift the bow and overall the boat just feels better. Even if I’m giving up some top end I think I’m going to run them this season.

The lack of sound at the dock is mostly due to the fact that this boat sits super ass-heavy which puts the tips under the water line.

The difference in props could be the model. A Mirage vs a Mirage Plus will be different and could load the engines harder.
4600-5000 is the rpm range of the 454 Magnum/Bravo. (‘88-up). The 23P Mirage should the right prop and would have been original to the boat. You could run a 25P Mirage (not the Plus) for better cruise so long as it meets the minimum RPM rating if running WOT. Really nice boat! Ditch the Silent Blunder. You’ll thank yourself later... so will your transom. |
Subscribed. Im really starting to like the old birds.

The cheap aftermarket aluminum platforms just don’t do it for me. My next boat will be a few feet longer with thru-hulls :) |

Thanks! I’m aware of the difference between the standard Mirage and the Plus. The boat had Mirage 25’s when I bought it and I swapped them out for Mirage 23’s... not plus. The boat didn’t want to push the 25’s past about 4300rpm. That’s with fresh ignition components, new fuel pumps/lines and throttle cables. It seems to really like the 23’s in comparison. Noticeably quicker out of the hole and acceleration and overall seems to ride much more bow up. Not to mention 4800rpm at WOT with two adults and a full load.

Not sure I'd say they're ugly without the ST...
