311 Prop Choice--help

HAVE A 91 311 W/454MAGS---23"PITCH...BUT IM RUNNING 5000RPMS.....WOULD LIKE TO POSS GO TO A 24" 4 BLADE..WANT TO KNOW WHAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE RUNNING---IM RUNNING IN FRESHWATER--I'M HAPPY W/OUT OF THE HOLE PERFORMANCE BUT FEEL LIKE I'M REALLY TACHING IT UP W/SOME TIMES 5100RPMS AND I THINK THATS A LITTLE HIGH...

Rambunctious 03-19-2003 08:59 PM

the mags peak power are at about 5,000. the owners i know with 420's are running 23 mirages too. you could try to pull a 25 like i have for my 272. i think the 311 doesn't need a 4 blade, waste's power turning the extra blades but you could try.

you can get your props lab finished for about $200 each and have a slight cup added. efectively giving you a little more pitch, but you are pretty close now.

just my opinion

Eliminator, I bought a 302 yesterday with the same paint scheme.

Hey Eliminator,
I have a 311 also, 1989. Your yellow 311 is just plain gorgeous!! Always likes the yellow paint scheme. Now that I'm done drooling over your "beautiful bird", I'm thinking your RPMs sound a little low. I have 454MAGS, I see you have 420s. Basically the same motors. Mine are supposed to run at about 5000 to 5200. I'm running 23s. Your speed sounds real good though. Have you had that low RPM checked? Is it right? No big deal, just wondering.
Once again, nice friggin' boat man!!!!!!

Thirdbird, the RPMS are low for sure. The boat has always ran the same RPM .I have never done any prop swaps . I should probaly drop down to a 23 pitch, just to see if the RPMS pick up. I have a new dash in the boat, all new gaffrig , still the same RPM.

Eliminator,
Even yellow goodies on the helm!!!!!! I gotta quit looking at your boat, makes mine look so normal!!!! You should hang on to that baby, truely unique, not many yellow ones around.

Where are you form Eliminator? I'd love to check your boat out up close and personal. I'm on lake Ontario, eastern shore by Oswego, NY.

Mine is 89' 311 454 mags and Bravos. 23" Mirage top speed around 64-65 @ 4900 - 5000. The 89' 454 mag is rated from 4600 - 5000. Knowing the bottom end of these motors, and the fact that I don't run mine wide open for extended periods, I like to stay towards the upper end of the RPM range. Lugging a motor too hard can be just as detrimental as over-revving it. If it's running 5100 and you want to knock it down a bit, have your props turned up a bit. Any competent prop shop can do it. They can either add 1" of pitch or just add some cup to the blades.

As was said before, just my .02

Eliminator,
Your right in my neck of the woods! Have you gone to Harborfest in Oswego with your boat? If not, you should really make the trip. The fire works on Saturday night are awesomw from the water. We usually anchor just outside the west breakwall, weather permitting. The fire works alone are worth the trip. Literally hundreds of boats there, some really nice hardware shows up ("software" is pretty good too) Maybe we could hook up for few cold ones. I boat out of Sandy Pond most of the time. Launch ramps there pretty much suck but its close to home.

We go the river (A-Bay) quite a bit too. Put in at Keywayden (sp?). We've been down to Onieda a few times but I don't know that lake very well, can be nasty if you don't know where you're going. If you make it to Oswego, take a cruise over to Sandy Pond. I'll buy you a few!! If you make up my way, I'm usually on channel 72, ThirdBird is the handle. :D :D

ThirdBird,
Nope, never been to Haborfest, but I hear a lot about it. A cold brew sounds good...I like the thought of some nice Software..... I will be sure to drop you a line when I head out this summer..
