Subs in my 311?
I have a pair of 12" subs and a 1400 watt amp to install in my '89 311. Thinking of mounting them in the side panels, facing the bolsters.
Will this location rattle too much? Maybe shake the hull sides or the side panels too much? I like the idea of placing them behind (next to) the bolsters as they will be protected there and I really don't store anything in that far into the side. Any comments? |

You may end up with a stepped hull if you turn it up all the way. :D

AUDIOFN WHERE ARE YOU????????
I need your advice on my install. Too much for the side compartments???? |
In my 312, I currently have my 12" woofer installed in the side storage compartment on a carpeted 3/4 plywood piece screwed to the inner side wall of the boat. A grill covers it and the door still slides closed to hide if when stored. I would like the space back so I also would like to mount directly into the side wall too. It is about 1/4-5/16" of glass there so I think it would be stiff enough but I guess we could epoxy a stiffner to it if needed. Let us know how

Hey BlownFormula,
How does the sub sound in there? Does it vibrate the hull sides too much? Vibration is my biggest concern. I think that area directly next to the bolsters would be a perfect place for my subs. I cant really store any this in there anyway, its too far forward from the sliding plexiglass door. I can't recall how your 312 is set up as far as the side storage areas Blown, but I think its basically the same as my older 311. There's lots of you guys out there with older 272s, 292s, 311s, and 357s. Anybody tried mounting big subs in the area I'm considering?? |
It is the area directly in front of the rear seat so it would be a little stiffer than just a flat panel. However, I was wanting to mount it in the side wall under the bolsters. It would require I believe, a couple of acrylic "stiffners" be secured to the panel to help stop any resonance. I currently have no trouble with rattles or other hull sounds...... but I don't have 1400 watts either!!
In your situation, I think I would use the new square Kicker subs.... an 8"sq sub puts out like a 10" round, a 10" like a 12" round..... smaller speakers but more sound. sounds like a good deal to me!! I would put them into the front of the rear seat making a good sealed enclosure....and very stiff too. |
Yeah Blown,
I have seriously considered the front of the rear seat. Everyone puts them there. However, I use that space under the seat for anchors, tools, ropes and all kinds of stuff that wouldn't be "speaker friendly". I don't know,,,,,,,,,still hemming and hawing over it. I do appreciate your thoughts and inputs though:cool: |

Sorry bro I am on the road and no good internet connection. I will try and get on line soon and update ya.

I've looked at both places (sides and rear seat).
My latest idea is to mount them in the SIDES of the rear seat box, with the magnets facing outboard. Put guards over the magnet assys so stuff in the side trays won't bother them. Will take up practically ZERO storage space in the seat box, and will take minimal side storage space. Looks like a stiff location, and you won't be bothered by audible harmonics from the subs (you ain't supposed to HEAR them, only to FEEL them). I store lots of stuff in the seatbox, but it's not much in the way of actual effective volume. That's my current plan... (I personally think the side panels will sound too boomy unless you seal off the sliding access doors). But! Audiofn will come thru with the most rational answer whenever he gets his internet connection working again... |
TTT
Audio, I see you're back!!! Any comments on where I'd like to mount my subs buddy?? |
ok the sides will work. We did Norts as you already know under the seat. That worked well and will work even better if we replace the plastic that they use with a stiffer wood. The problem with subs is they shake EVERYTHING. So were you put them needs to be SUPER solid. If the mount flexes at all you will get a loss of output. What kind of subs are they that you have? Are they free air or do they need a encosure to work properly? If you need to build a box to fit them in they your problem of stiffness is greatly reduced because yout back box will make the mounting surface stronger. Norts were free air subs and they do not take up much room do to the fact that behind the baffle (front of the back seat) there is just the magnet structure. One of these days he will get me some pictures of his side speakers!!! YOU HEAR THAT NORT!!! :D
Get me the info on the speakers that you are using and I will try and help ya out more. Jon |
Thanks Jon,
The subs came in an enclosure, both in one big-ass enclosure. So, I expect they need the enclosure to work efficiently. I'll check them out more closely tonight. Thanks for the reply. Dave |
See if you can get the make and model number. You WILL need to make an enclosure for them or not only will they not sound good but they will blow up faster if you do not. This could limit your choices depoending on how energetic you are :D:D The worst thing about Formula's (ask Nort and Troutly) running wires in them SUCKS!!!!!

I have tried everything to mount two 12" subs in my 302...The best yet (this year) was to use Memphis' Studio Line 12's in a 1.25 cubic foot box in the side storage compartment where the door slides to when it is open. We removed the fiberglass, and instered the box in it's place. It looks like we just mounted the sub to the panel, where in reality it is an enclosure. It hits VERY hard and clear. I'm powering it with a hybrid Class D amp, which has a 1000 watt sub (2000 watt peak) and a 75x4 for the pair of 6 1/2" & 6x9's. The guy at the stereo shop fabricated a set of fiberglass speaker pods which are mounted by the grab rails behind the front bolsters. They flush mounted the amp in the cabinet over the fridge!! Awesome job and it sound GREAT. I can send you Pics if you would like. I'll take my digital camera up to the boat this coming weekend...Let me know.

:) Absolutely!! we want pic's.. of the whole thing... I am going to be doing my other boat soon and like the helpful hints and views of other system installs.
In a boat, you havew to be creative! |
I think you should "mike" the exhaust, turn the thing up max, and blow windows out for fun. Formula Outlaw

Speakers and Amps and music
Hey Guys
I wish my son were here now as he could better explain the sound system in my Formula 271, but here goes. When we bought this boat, most of the equipment was installed but not working well. We have a total of twelve speakers throughout the boat, with four (2 twelves and 2 tens I think) installed beneath the back seat. My son built a carpet (matching available at Lowe's) covered box enclosure for the middle speakers and the two on either side are not enclosed to allow "some" storage--two pillows for floatation to be exact. We have two amplifiers (I think 1200 watt each)installed on the passenger side panel on a piece of plywood. He installed XMSR satellite radio and new Alpine CD player and Receiver. I paid a couple of audio guys 650.00 to rewire and replace as necessary to insure accurate connections everywhere. We almost never play the CD's unless by special request from a "baby doll" because the satellite radio is CRYSTAL CLEAR. All of this "juice" is why we have installed four batteries just to get thru a good day of "hangin out". We are looking for an infrared receiver that we can mount in the dash in place of the unused radio that is currently there and direct connect it to the Alpine unit in the cabin. The remote control unit has to be directed toward the Alpine which is in the cabin so it is inconvenient if you like to channel surf as my son does. Since we only have a single 502, we mounted a storage box for the anchor in the engine compartment. We don't have the fastest ride on the lake, but we've got the "baddest" sounds. Kenny |
Kenny go to your local custom stereo installer and ask them for a IR repeater. They are made by Zantech, Niles, and a bunch of other guys. You can put your IR recieving eye in the dash and then just put the IR blaster in the cabin and you will be set. They all opperate on 12 volt (at leaste every one that I have ever seen) so you just cut off the 110 plug and wire it to the boats electrical system.

Sorry guys...forgot my camera!! My Bad. Will try again next week.
