masi242,

I am in southern new hampshire but I boat in Maine. Sebago Lake, ever hear of it or been there? Anyway, what did your boat come with originally? 330? And how did you upgrade to the 350hp? If I could get one with around 400hp I bet that would be enough to satisfy me. But I'll keep looking for the right one!

Formula 454, I spent 18 years in Maine. Sebago is one of my old stompin grounds. Moosehead is another great boating area. Boy, that brought back great memories.

Formula454

Yes I do know where sebago is never been thier my parents live in so. maine,so when I am up to see them I`m on the ocean. I bought my 242ls last year it came with a 454/365hp I though the motor was still ok, what a nightmare so I put in a new 454(wife was not happy) as you have read some my 87 came with a alpha new in 99. I only have 60 hours on the engine and no problems with my alpha, any drive you have you should take it easy. I think for your boating a single bbc would be great just my .02.

good luck

mark

masi242,
I talk to a guy, the guy that let me drive his 242 actually, and he had the same situation, a 454 in an 87 with an alpha drive. However he said he had blown his the year before so he installed a bravo this time. other than that the boat seemed to be in great condition.

I'm back on. Somehow my name got changed and I just got back on here. I would really like to know the max hull speed of my '86 242LS.I'm not going to remove my teak platform!it's great. It had an alpha and a 330. I bought it needing a motor. I made it a bravo, and put a std bore 365 mag motor together except for the 049 heads with extensive porting and larger valves, as well as a port matched slightly modified cast iron oval port holley Hi- Rise Intake manifold. Also had Lab engine mill TRW2349 pistons slightly to make a useable increase in compression over the 2399 stock ones. I run solid hub 23 mirage. It does 62GPS I also run silent choice. I have all the parts to make a 496 roller motor. I'm trying to decide oval vs rect. port heads. I'm really contemplating a 540 or larger motor and a drive that can take it, Only if the hull design will let me go really fast. I really love this boat. I have enough parts to build many motors. Thanks for any help!

Formula 454 -

My dad bought a 1983 272 with two 350cid 260hp new in 1983. The boat ran 63 mph new. Today it has just under 1500 hours with the original engines, drives, all equip. and still runs like a top and starts right up every time.

The quality and reliability of my dad's boat convinced one of my buddies to buy a 1985 242LS with the same engines (2 350cid 260hp). His boat was not well taken care of and needed work. He has spent a lot on it. However, I can still outrun him in my dad's boat. I can also tell you this: His 242 does not have a porpoise problem (unless you run too much trim). Moreover, the engine access in the 242 is actually better than the 272 (or my 357) because the 242's rear seat is easily removable and provides unbelievable access to the engine compartment. Also, an older 242 (without the integrated swim platform) is almost as large as a new 271 (with the swim platform molded into the hull). So, you get a lot of boat for your money. Having two engines is also a huge aid in parking and maneuverability at slow speeds. The twin engine 242s are out there but they're not easy to find. Keep looking they're great boats.

When I bought my first boat about 6 months ago it had to be a Formula. I found an '85 357 SR1 with blown 454s and jumped on it. Go Formula. You'll be glad you did.

An 84 242ls was on e-bay apx 4 months ago.
It was a twin engine boat. It had 2 1995 gen 5 motors and alpha drives. The boat went 75MPH! was listed for 8500 It went unsold. The boat was like new I believe stored indoors. It was in the midwest I think. It looked like exhaust manifolds were almost touching each other in the middle. There was also an '84 in N.J. about 6-7months ago with a single 350 No bottom paint, $5000 unsold! Just thought this was interesting

"Dave's right, I got info from Formula on an 81' 302 that I was considering buying. Ended up not getting into it, too much work, but Formula sent me pages of info."

Formula Outlaw - I've run itnto the same thing trying to find info on the "81 233LS. Is there someone in particular you have been successful with? Can I get their info?

Thanks,

OFB
