Speedo not working...

Bought a brand new 292 and the speedo stopped working at 10 hours. What should I check? Where is the pick-up? Could it be clogged with something? Give me your thoughts.

Your lucky, my 2003 382 speedo only worked 5 hours. The line got cut by the exhaust port in the gimbel housing. Run the drive up and look inside from the left.

BTW, The actual pickup is in the front of the drive about 3 inches above the prop shaft, it may be plugged. On twins they sometimes tie the speedo to both drives. Both mine are cut. We put in splices but they blew off at 65 mph. Still not fixed. Let us know if yours got cut also.

I had the same problem with my 353. The pickup has gotten clogged several times. When this occurs, I use a 3/32 drill bit to clean out the pickup (learned this handy trick on OSO). Just recently, I experienced the problem above where my line either burst or was cut. My next course of action is a GPS Speedo to fix the problem once and for all. Good luck with your 292

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one. Thanks for the great info...I check these areas.

It is in the lead point of the port drive on your 292. I know because I have one. I plugged and installed GPS.
They constantly stop working until you clean the pickup .

Donzilla, How did you plug the pickups?

Thanks Donzilla...I found the exact location that you identified. I appreciate your help. What kind of GPS did you add? Where did you mount it on the 292?

tesheer,

Go to http://www.bobsmachine.com/ under maintainance supplies and order the epoxy putty to fill the pick up hole. After light sanding, buy spray cans of primer and black outdrive paint from your Mercury dealer.
