Nice job cant wait to see the final products!!

Formula Outlaw 01-05-2004 08:18 AM

Don, you're right, I probably won't be able to use these props. If you're interested I'll cut you a deal. They are as "brand new" condition. I always take them off the drives after going out, polish them, and put them away in a sealed bag until the next time out. I figure I'll probably be spinning 30's at least. Right now I'm getting around 4900/5000, sometimes 5150 on the top, depending on weight in the boat.

WES311SR1 01-05-2004 02:48 PM

looks good Don , keep the pics. coming.

Formula Outlaw 01-05-2004 05:08 PM

The fairing is looking really good.

WAGS382 01-05-2004 07:21 PM

Russ,
What I meant with high torqe was a motor built to max out at approx 5500 rpm or a little less with a real strong and flat torqe curve instead of a high rpm motor with a torqe curve that peaks too high for you to use. I am running 454's with merlin oval ports and hyd roller cams with 527 ft lbs of tourqe and 530 hp. The boat has excellent throttle response, good fuel economy, strong idle and very reliable. If you want more power than what I have you might want to strart with a larger displacement. I guess what I am trying to say is that this boat had 330's and the first 200 hp increase picked up 15 mph another 100 hp would pick up approx another 6 mph and I dont know if it is worth the money.

Formula Outlaw 01-06-2004 07:45 AM

Jeff, you make a really strong point and what you have is what I'm looking for. I don't want to be the fastest, just faster and but importantly reliable. And I want useable power, not something I have to be at 5 grand to make power. Thanks again for all the imput. Russ

Chase910 01-06-2004 02:14 PM

dgduck13, I personally like the new graphic paint sceme you picked, but please loose the Miami Vise pink and Teal colors as they really date the boat...basically as bad taste!!! Stick with primary colors, red, yellow, blue, black. You don't see any teal or pink sports cars do you?
That will do more to update the boat than anything else.

Formula Outlaw 01-06-2004 02:21 PM

I don't particularly care for the magenta either, I like a teal, black, and yellow scheme. Saw one on a Cig and it looked great. Just my two cents...

Maritime_Eng 01-07-2004 11:53 AM

I am also not a fan of the colors that are on the boat, but you have to make due with what you have. The bolsters and seats would be costly to recover and WES311 took such good care of the boat before I bought it that it is not worth doing, the seats are perfect. This is why I am painting the boat the way that I am, mostly black with teal and very little pink. It will look a lot less dated that it does now.
:)

Maritime_Eng 01-07-2004 11:57 AM

Formula Outlaw-
I am interested in your props. I still have to call Hydromotive to make sure that they would work, but doing some quick calculations I think that they are right in the ballpark. Send me an email and let me know what you are looking to get for the pair. Thanks

Don

Formula Outlaw 01-07-2004 05:41 PM

Don, gotcha. How soon are you looking to get them? I need to plan this around my motor work. Russ

WAGS382

Not to hijack the thread, but Formula 311 SR1 has been on my short list for some time.

Is it in the OSO classifieds?
What ya' looking for out of it.
Wouldn't be interested in a cool 20' BB Cigarette?

Let me know.
Uncle Ernie :D

RedDog382 01-08-2004 02:52 PM

Ernie,

Hey ... I met you down at the Navy Bistro on Memorial weekend. Haven't seen you since. If you're thinking about a 311, I traded mine without power for a 382 this summer. But WAGS 311 is super clean and mechanically sound ... I highly recommend you take a look at it if you can. I could take a trip over there if you want to see it. Let me know. 419-882-1680.

Chris

ernie davis 01-08-2004 02:56 PM

Whoops, found it in the Classifieds Jeff.
Wow, that's one sweet ol' girl, but a bit out of my price range.

Darn pretty though.

:chimp:

ernie davis 01-08-2004 03:05 PM

Hey Chris,

Yeah I remember, even thought about yours when I saw it for sale w/o power (speaking of squeeky clean), but I didn't want to owe my sole to Reno for the re-rig :D
Would like to see that 382 some time, looks pretty cool.

A few weeks after I drank with you guys down at the docks, I broke my
f@#king foot skiing and was in a cast most of the summer:rolleyes:
Kinda put a crimp in the boating action......

Really appreciate the offer, but I better check my resources ($$$) before I bother him.
Unless he would like to take a really cool little 20' in on trade:D

Hope to talk with you soon.

Uncle Ernie

RedDog382 01-08-2004 03:10 PM

Ernie,

Hate to tell you, but my boat re-sold for only $25,000 one week after it went on the market. The guy had to tow it from California back to New York! Another friend of mine would have bought it for that price and saved me the tow to California if I had only known!

ernie davis 01-08-2004 03:26 PM

Wow, I never seem to be in the right place/time.

Tried to buy CashBrain's old 31 Excaliber over the holidays, but it sold just before I could get up there with "the boys" to check it out in person.

Oh well. I've got Ten Foot-itis pretty bad, so I'm on the hunt. Just gotta get over being a cheep-skate.

Chase910 01-08-2004 03:36 PM

djduck13, you don't have to recover the seats to change the interior color...you can have it stained, basically painted. I have a friend who is runs an interior shop and I've seen him do this when someone wants a different interior color, or when there is a stain that can't be removed. I've saw him spray the whole rear deck cover of a brand new donzi Z-33 that a mechanic had stained with trans fluid and you could not tell it had been colored....the feel was the same as was the look compared to the rest of the interior. Its just like painting the hull, they have special paints just for vinyls and they will hold up. Seeing how the pink is probably a small portion of your interior color would make this a great way to go. Something to consider if you really would like to change the interior color without the redo expense.
Of course the results would depend upon who is applying the stain.

WAGS382 01-08-2004 05:14 PM

Ernie,
Thanks for the compliment on the boat. You should take up Chris on that offer, your not that far from here. The boat is in a heated pole barn in my back yard so you can get a good look at it in any weather. RedDog thanks for the plug on the 311.

Maritime_Eng 01-09-2004 07:31 PM

Outlaw-

I am in no hurry for the props. When ever you are planning on doing the motor work let me know. I would like the first chance to buy them.

Thanks
Don

Maritime_Eng 01-09-2004 07:33 PM

chase 910-

Thanks for the information. Do you have a name and number of your friend that I could contact to ask him a few questions?

Thanks
Don

Formula Outlaw 01-10-2004 08:02 AM

Don, you got first dibbs. Russ

Audiofn 01-11-2004 12:16 PM

DfDuck I am also doing a fairing on my boat (side tracked right now :(. What did you make yours out of? I did mine out of Nica Core and glassed it down so that it will look like the boat came out of the mold that way.

Jon

Maritime_Eng 01-11-2004 08:31 PM

Audiofn-

To make my fairing I used the original frame with the glassed removed. I shortened it by five inches and then used plywood for the straight sides to give it some support. For the front I used some bendable plastic that I glued to the frame. Once I had the frame done I used expanding foam to fill in the low spots and then shaved it smooth. Then I fiberglassed the entire thing front and back. Now I have to sand and sand...... well you get the point to get the smooth finish. Then it will be ready for paint! :D I did this all off of the boat so if someone ever wanted to install a windsheild they could. But I know I never will. I hope that this helps you form a picture of the steps that I used.

Don

Formula Outlaw 01-11-2004 09:21 PM

Now you're making me want to do that to Outlaw.

Maritime_Eng 01-12-2004 12:02 PM

Outlaw

If you have any questions on building a fairing let me know.

After you have practiced on Outlaw, I'll bring Hell Bent over for you to do too.:D

Formula Outlaw 01-12-2004 09:17 PM

Don, I have a question about the fairing. Will you do it for me???:D :D :D :D

And a couple of 600 hp motors while your at it....:D :D

Formula Outlaw 01-12-2004 09:18 PM

Don, seriously, post some pix of the progress and maybe email me the basics. I'm strongly considering it.

Maritime_Eng 01-19-2004 10:29 PM

Hi Guys-

Well this weekend I stripped the entire interior out of the boat to get it ready for the last coats of fiberglass on the race fairing and begin prep for paint. I did find out that I will not be able to mount the fairing on after the boat is painted as I first thought. The reason for this is because if I do everything off of the boat the fairing will not mount up with correct gaps. So to get around this I fiberglassed the inside of the fairing to fill in the gaps and smooth it out. Then I mounted it using the stock holes and screws. Then I taped off the entire area around the fairing filled in the gaps with expanable marine grade foam. Then I fiberglassed over the front of the fairing to smooth it out. I will keep you posted on the progress.

Maritime_Eng 01-19-2004 10:40 PM

On another note I am in the process of redoing the sundeck of the boat so it is all white. I am going to make it out of one piece instead on the individual sections. I am hoping that this will give the boat more of an updated look. I was wondering if it is possible to exactly match the white vinyl used in the boat? I have talked to a few shops around here that can come close but it is not a perfect match. Any help would be great.

Audiofn 01-20-2004 06:40 AM

Just keep looking. You can call up Formula and they may be able to tell you who they used.

An upholstry guy once told me NOT to just use one piecs of fabric on the sun deck or it will bellow in the wind.

This is true!! I have seen one-piece sun pad vinyl and it looks like chit while underway. Not too many manufacturers do this for that reason. There is no way to make it tight enough.

Formula Outlaw 01-21-2004 09:07 PM

I agree. I rode in a boat once with just one piece on the sun pad, and it actually made noise it was shaking so bad.

Maritime_Eng 01-21-2004 09:19 PM

If this is true who does Formula get away with it? They are one piece after the head-rests?

Chart 01-21-2004 10:15 PM

IF you glued the fabric to the foam, it might not bellow. But you would need to also glue the foam to the hatch. Personally, I'd worry that one piece of white would look generic, not classy like other Formula white interiers.

Maritime_Eng 01-22-2004 07:54 AM

The back sun deck is not going to be one piece white. It is going to be like the new formulas are with the one piece of vinyl that is multi colored with a design. I just want to get way from the multi section sundeck.

WES311SR1 01-22-2004 04:25 PM

If done right you will also lose some pounds... because for each color section there is a lenght of plywood, foam, thin/foam plastic then the fabric. Don I replaced the wood under the aft white section fall of 2002.

Maritime_Eng 01-22-2004 10:25 PM

Hi Wes-

Thanks for the Info! I would have found that out this weekend when I was working on the boat. Did you just replace the wood or did you replace the foam too? Just curious?

Don
