What is the fastest 272SR1
I would like to know what is the fastest late 80s Formula 272SR1 anyone knows of? What motors and HP did it have?
I have now managed to hit 93.1 mph with 135 gal fuel and two persons in my 89 Formula 272SR1!:D I am running 454s with Whipples and would estimate I am making about 600 - 650 HP each. |
You may be the about the fastest. I have never heard of an older 272 topping 93. I guess you have some pretty smooth water to run in.
We have both a 272 and a 357 and I sure wouldn't want to be running 90 in that 272 across some big water. I bet that is one blast to drive. |
That's the fastest I've heard about.
|
Fastest I've ever heard too. Can I borrow some???????
|
Cay,
Just curious...what props and what rpms??? |
Mopower looks like you`ll be in second:D :D
|
On the conditions it actually wasn't too nice at all. Take a look at some of the photos from the poker run www.mdr.ky or www.vibefm.ky we had on Monday and you will see what I mean. I have just recently replace the gimbals and drives and with the new gimbals it handles a lot better.
I am running Bravo I 30s labbed by York and turning them 5700 with 1.5 ratio. This thing accellerates like a rocket.:D When I ran 93.1 this was without the trim I usually run for top speed as it was a little too nasty to trim it out all the way. I also had a full tank of fuel at the time. I am confident It will run 95+ light and trimmed out. |

Here is a picture of us launching of a wave at about 75mph in the poker run.
Mopower do you have on your silent thunder platform? When I removed mine i gained 7mph. I knew that exhaust was an issue for me though. |

Usually it's little , to no gain at all. And yes mine's still there. My 540s exact dyno readings were 648.7hp @5688 and 689.1 ft lbs @4174. Got (borrowed)28 unlabbed Bravos right now. Hope to try it this weekend. Masi, Second is fine:). That way you're not the one eveybody tries to beat;) |
Mopower, it should run with those motors. What sort of drives and lowers are you running? I am running XR uppers with IMCO 2" shorter lowers.
Even with the 30 Bravos this thing accellerates like crazy, I can go from 25 to 90mph within a marked quarter mile. I am confident I can reach 100 mph if I put on some decent exhaust and the right size carb for my application. I am pretty sure I would realize about 100-150hp each with these changes. By the way it is still a family boat and runs strictly pump gas, no race fuel even in the poker run. |

That has to be a white knuckle ride, i had a 272 and it was a handful in snotty water!!!
|
Wow 93 I wonder if Formula ever thought this hull would see that kind of speed? Kind of doubt it with the big hooks in the hull. Nam Cay that is awsome
|
Hey Mo
how's that 540 project going all dialed in yet? |
Big hooks in the hull???
I never noticed any hook on my 272. I know my 357 doesn't have a hook because I checked after some improper storage on the trailer. Did the 272s have an engineered hook in the hull? |
Russ SR1,
No , not yet. Was out last Sunday for the first time and had a K-Plane that wouldn't retract all the way:mad: . Fixed that Saturday night. Went again Sunday and backed it off the trailer and found out I couldn't get the left drive out of reverse:eek: . Nothing serious...an easy fix...took all of ten minutes...AFTER I got the part today:rolleyes: . The plastic cable end that holds the sheath broke. bford1, My 272 has a hook in the last foot between the outside strake and the chine. It's very obvious , as the 2 inch strake disappears into the bottom. Just put a straight edge on it and you can see were the hook is ;) |
I hit a new top speed of 97mph this weekend in the annual poker run/race before I broke a drive:mad:. This was with two people and a full tank of gas, still running the same props, drives and motors however I have upgraded the exhaust to the Stainless Marine Gen III exhaust with dry tailpipes and bigger carbs. I have also gone through the hull complelely (replacing stringers and bulkheads, adding two small stringer under the engines and glassing the hull and deck together), repainted the hull.
I am convinced she would have hit 100mph this weekend if the drive had held up till we burn off some fuel. The best part is we still won the race with one motor, we were able to maintain 60mph on the one and all of the other real fast boats broke so with the lead we had we still won. |

You are the man Cay!!!! That is running for a 272 |
I had a 87' Formula doing well over 100 mph last year for about 2 miles. Had a nice long strait shot and went for it! Slowed down after that. Got a little concerned about the wheel-bearings, and getting a speeding ticket...
|
Dude Wow!!!!
|
I'm looking for 100 mph next time out with a little tweaking. I am down 2# on boost since I put on the new exhaust so I am sure when I bump that back up I will pickup another 1 or 2 mph.
The first 2 laps of the race were awesom, I was head to head with a close friend of mine in a 42' Fountain Poker Run edition with twin Merc 600SC's. |
Our 87 272 only had a 129 gal tank whan did they change.:grinser010:
|
Thats awesome, one question though, What is a poker run race?
|
Awesome. Do you guys really have poker runs in the Cayman Islands? Tell us about that $hit!!!!!! :D Are they all topless?
|
I think it would be more accurate to say we have a race that is combined with a game of 5 card stud the prize for which is up to $1M but normally $10k. The organizer tries to make it a spectator event instead of being a boater event. The race takes place over about 60 miles and unlike a poker run it is continuous. You draw 2 cards before the race and 3 after for the poker hand.
Unfortunately because it is more of a race there are not normally any ladies on the boats just 2 racers with jackets and helmets. |

How many Gal/Hour at ful speed?? |
I'm not sure on the GPH but I expect about 140 - 150gph based on the old rule of thumb that a gas engine burns about 10 gals per hour per 100 hp.
The drive is giving me a bit of difficulty coming apart (separating upper from lower) so I don't actually know how serious it is yet. I took of the top cap and everything looked good there so I am hoping it is something simple like the coupler broke. |
We want pics. of the new paint and the last poker run/race. When can we try one of the engines in my 223ls?

It's a pitty I don't have any photos of the Fountain Poker Run 42 with twin 600s trying to catch me. The only one I have handy is this one.
|
Hell, I was happy when I put the 420's in my old 272 and got 70 out of it..
|
Very nice!!!
|
Well my new best top speed in 272 is 97.9mph with a set of stock (non-labbed) 32p Bravo1 props. The changes since my earlier posts where I was doin 93 are that I replaced the Holley 850cfm carbs with QFT 1050cfm annular carbs and upgraded the exhaust from the Stainless Marine Hi-torque to thier Gen3 manifolds with dry tailpipes.
I made a video of one of the runs recently that I will post when I download it. |
You are nuts, but way to go

I am sure I can get it over the 100 mph mark, I think the props will do it but just a good tune-up would likey get it there (needs an oil change now at the plugs haven't been changed in a year).

I have a new for the 272SR1 101MPH on GPS and backed up by GPS speedo. I was turning labbed Bravo1 34P 5900 (slip a bit high but props don't have much cup). I think I can actually get about 103 with a little tweeking. I was waiting to get a video to post it but broke a drive so thought I would go ahead now.
