Hey Outlaw - Hydromotive?

Formula Outlaw,
A while ago we discussed your Hydromotives on your 311. I have a 311 also, bone stock. Which ones did you get, QIV? I want to get the exact model you got since they worked so well for you.

Let me know what you run and where you bought them. I'm seeing like $525.00 each. Like to get that price down some. $1100.00 makes my discharge shute tighten up a bit!!:D

Any way, lets go through your performance gains again.

THANKS,
Dave

Which Year 311 do you have? Motors, Drives?

I have a 1991 311 with 502 mags and Bravo ones.

'89 311, 454 mags, bravos.

Third, here is what I got from the prop swap.

First: boat came with 23 inch Mirage three blade props

89 311 SR-1/ 454 mags, Bravo 1's

After extensive phone conversation with the guys at Hydromotive, they told me what to expect, here is what I saw on GPS.

I went with the 24 inch Hydromotive Quad IV's.

At cruise speed, 3300 rpms give or take, I saw 6/7 mph increase. At WOT I saw a 3 mph increase.

The Hydromotives lifted the ass of my boat higher out of the water which created much less drag hence, the higher speeds. Going up an inch in pitch helped too. Usually when you go from a 3 blade to a 4 blade you drop two inches but in my case, because of the reduced drag it enabled me to go up an inch. It just jumps up on plane effortlessly and will stay up on plane at slower speeds now also, without trim tabs down.

Try "Throttle Up" they are an advertiser here on OSO.

I'd also call Hydromotive just to see if the new props might help even more. My props are three years old now. Wouldn't hurt to call.

I paid a little over nine hundred for mine three years ago. Keep me posted. Russ

Thanks Russ, good info.

Teague has somewhat better prices on them.

ThirdBird 04-28-2004 10:15 PM

Thanks Apache, I'll check 'em out!;)

Well ...if I had a motor ! But for now one motor and a pump ! ....Props will have to wait ... :(

Formula Outlaw 05-02-2004 08:46 AM

"Off" don't feel like you're alone. Thought I'd finally gotten all my problems worked out and now I have to replace the manifolds and risers on both motors. Sometimes it seems like it just never ends (which by the way my wife reminds me of at least 47 times per day.) Looks like my new motors are going to have to wait another year. Oh well, I'd be thrilled just to get it back on the water. I'm about at the point to hook it up to the truck, have my wife drive me around town just to say "I went boating".

RedDog382 05-02-2004 10:45 PM

offthefront,

Ditto above. Just found out I have twisted vertical and prop shafts in the lower half of one of my drives (probably from the guy with the 950 H.P. blower motors that had it before me). And you know if one is bad, the other is probably bad, too! I can't really say I'm surprised, though. This is going to be expensive!

Russ,

Sometimes just as much fun that way! I've had more conversations with people at the gas station than at the dock. It's amazing how many heads you turn towing one of these down the road, too!:D

Red Dog, you are right about that. But it would be nice to actually float on the water for a change.

You are also right your little problem "ain't gonna be cheap". I did my propshafts, seals, etc. in both drives last summer and cost me almost 3K. My "verticle" shafts were OK. Keep us posted.

"Hi, my name is Russ, and I own a boat"

Practicing for my therapy group.

ThirdBird 05-03-2004 05:53 PM

"Hi Russ, my name is Dave, and also own a boat"

With our experience, maybe we could start an "Old boat owners support group":eureka:

Formula Outlaw 05-03-2004 07:29 PM

Dave, I do believe you are onto something here. :eureka:

Now I suggest we come up with a name for our support group.

I present for your consideration:

Throwmoneyawayaholics
Wivespissedoffatusaholics
Whatelseisgonnabreakaholics
Notagainaholics
B.O.A.T.aholics

ThirdBird 05-03-2004 07:49 PM

"Wivespissedoffatusaholics"

LMAO
:D :D :D

I can totally relate!!

Formula Outlaw 05-03-2004 10:42 PM

Dave, I pronounce you and I as the original two charter members of "Wivespissedoffatusaholics", and our first order of business will be to go buy something for the boat tomorrow. Russ

I will be trying 22 Bravo 1 props on a new to me Formula 336 this weekend. The boat came with 23 mirage + props and the previous owner said he could get 4800 rpm max with those props. Talked with Formula TAG and they mentioned going down 1 pitch when going to 4 blades. Also talked with hydromotive and they also suggested a 22 or 23 pitch quad IV. It sounds like the bravo 1 will still lift the rear out of the water just not as much as the hydromotive Q-IV which may be beter to avoid bow steer and plowing the bow.

Formula Outlaw 05-04-2004 10:32 AM

Powerguy, your 336 is essentially the same as my 311 except your swim platform (silent thunder) is "glassed in" while mine is bolted on and not figured in the LOA. My official LOA with the platorm bolted in place is 336. I have no problems whatsoever with too much stern lift with my Hydromotives. I would give them a try over the Bravos. Or better yet, try both. Just my two cents.

Re: Hey Outlaw - Hydromotive?

tried the bravo 1's and they did not perform well. better hole shot and same cruise but 3+mph loss at top end. Going to try 23 hydromotive's next week.

Re: Hey Outlaw - Hydromotive?

PG, Keep us posted on your progress. I'm particularly interested cause as I said we basically have the same boat. It would make reasonable sense that results would be closely the same. Russ

Re: Hey Outlaw - Hydromotive?

just an update on the 23 Hrdro's ...I have run WOT yet but shop testing my motor reported 65@4500 WOT ....that was just before it bent another valve ....It is better outa the hole and midrange ...

Re: Hey Outlaw - Hydromotive?

Mike you getting anywhere with the shop that did the work on your motor???? Russ

Re: Hey Outlaw - Hydromotive?

find out Monday ...motor is back out and they want to go into the bottom end ....nobody I have talked to can tell me how a bad bottom end can cause Valve to kiss piston ..they think I'm paying them for pulling the motor back out ....could get ugly ...

Formula Outlaw 10-03-2004 02:20 PM

Re: Hey Outlaw - Hydromotive?

I been working on motors since my first little Honda 50 Super Sport. I don't see what could go on in the bottom that would cause a piston to kiss a valve. My gut feeling is that the shop that screwed your motor up is just trying to cloud the whole issue to cover their azz.

IF you wrote a check, I'd seriously consider stopping payment on it.

Like has already been said, they only repaired the result, not the problem.

In my first Formula, a 242 with twin small blocks, I had a motor blow. A shop repaired it. I got it back, launched it, and didn't make it 200 yards before it blew again. Took it back and they ended up getting a new long block. They tried to charge me all over again, so I just smiled and wrote a check to get my boat out of their facility. Went straight to the bank and stopped payment on the check. They took me to court and the Judge threw it out after ten minutes. I wasn't about to pay twice for the same issue. The Judge agreed.
