You have a 12v into the switch( red I believe) and one coming out to power the gauges and ignition(purple). The other one goes to the starter solenoid.

You want it in the purple coming off the switch , going to the engine(ignition)
Yea confused me about the ground wire too unless he has some fancy lighted switch?

mopower has it right....and the starter wire will probably be yellow.....may even have a tracer on it sometimes...
