Need a tachometer

One of my tachs is shot. '89 311 with 454 Mags. Anyone have a source for these old-style VDO tachs. Heard VDO does not make or stock them any more. Any of you guys that have changed-out your gauges,,,,,,, still got the old ones? This is the VDO with rectangular black bezels. Do the bezels come off?

I can get you one from a '93 303. It's parked next to me at the boathouse. I can have it to you by Monday, cheap! I believe the bezel comes off with a #1 flat blade and lots of force. :D

Are you sure they are VDO's? Two of mine had Medallion's. I've got a full set of Medallion's for a single engine.

offthefront -

Are you sure it's the gauge? One of mine was barely moving when the boat was warmed up - turned out it was the sending unit. They are special VDO sending units so you can't just get one at a Boat US or West Marine but it fixed my problem.

It's the gauge. I swapped them and the bad one was still bad on the other engine.

I think axa should give you his tach as a "thank you"... :D

Go to www.egauges.com. This is the source Formula suggests for the older stuff. Look for the Vanguard series. The bezels come off with a twist counterclockwise.

Thanks for the info Magic. Just checked out the site, looks like they still carry the very tach I need including the square bezel. They don't exactly give them away though!!!!!

Re: Need a tachometer

Third, at least what you need is still available! That's  . A wise man in your "position" would probably be wise to get two. The chances that the movement will fail in the other one in the next season or two are pretty good. I would think the movement in the other tach would fail before any other guage does. ;)

ThirdBird 08-12-2004 05:14 PM

Re: Need a tachometer

Yeah Rip, I agree on the "get two thing". However, 800 bucks for two tachs is pretty rich. I had no idea they cost like that. Of course, I've never had to but one before. :(

   Call 'em...try to work a deal is all you can do. That's f**kin rediculous $$$

Re: Need a tachometer

Now, about replacing a tach,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, do they need to be calibrated to your engine or do you just hook 'em up and they work. Excuse if this is a dumb question but I just don't know :o :o

offthefront 08-12-2004 06:31 PM

Re: Need a tachometer

I would think there is no Calibration ...Also like you were thinking seems there would be used ones available ....

Re: Need a tachometer

8 bills would probably cover a custom cut panel and all new Farias at the very least, or maybe even Gaffrig or other quality dry guages. Too Old or another vendor here can probably hook you up with discount pricing on the guages. Axa can probably hook you up with the dude who did his panel...laser engraved and all. I would think about this 1st...before doing anything. Stay with a black panel and black (Faria), or maybe platinum/silver/chrome (other vendor, there are many) guage bezels. The guage bezels themselves are available in a variety of contours from a number of manufacturers. My 2 cents.

Dave if you decide to go with other Gauges let me know I might be interested ...I would like to leave it stock but it really sucks at nite ..can barely see the Gauges ...Someone posted (you?) that they swapped out all the bulbs and it didn't improve it .....

SeaWeasel 08-13-2004 11:10 AM

Re: Need a tachometer

offthefront . . . that was me. All new bulbs- $60 worth at a discount -and no improvement. I will be swapping panel and quages out this winter. And while I am on the subject, who/where is the source for a panel and how many of the sending units have to be swapped if anyone out there has done this? Would like to go with autometer or gaffrig.

Bad,
If it's the same as mine, I'll take it. Does it have the square black bezel?
