382 or 419 formula How fast???

Hi guys,

I have been looking at 382's and 419's for awhile now (no I don't want to buy one, can't afford it :( )and I wanted to know which one is faster. I am assuming a 419 would be faster since it has one more engine. But It is weighs so much more than a 382. Also what in your opinions is the best of the two. and is formula still making the 419 fastech??? I heard somthing about being able to "speacial order one" but I don't know if this is true or not. :D

Thanks
QD

Re: 382 or 419 formula How fast???

The 419 is a little faster with the same power, with not much more than 1 foot extra usable room than the 382. The 419 is not made anymore, and I've heard that they will not make any more even as a special order. The 419 was built totally different than the rest of the FasTech lineup.

Troutly,

Your boat is so awesome. I love the "Storm" graphics they are my
favorite. That is the BEST looking 382 I've ever seen. If i could only afford it :( .

So the 419 was not a big seller. I wonder why? I really like it and the 382 as well. I would like to own either one.

I have a 311 sr1 right now and am extremely happy with it except for the fact that it does breakdown quite a bit, but I am going to pull the engines out pretty soon and rebuild. I doubt that you have any problems with your 382.

QD,

I think one of the big issues with the 419 is insurance. I have been with my carrier since high-school (a LONG time!) without a major claim, and they said they simply would not insure a 419 due to the combined H.P. rating. My coverage for the 382 is a little over $1000.00 annually vs around $700.00 for my '89 311. Coverage for a 419 would have exceeded $3000.00!

I think another issue is portability of a 419. A 382 is much more difficult to tow than a 311, and a 419 with triples would be extremely difficult for the average person to tow or transport.

Troutly is right ... there is very little difference in usable space between a 382 and a 419 (except that you could squeeze a few more 'kini's on the engine hatch). But I've heard the stepped 419's ride is fantabulous. The extra three feet would be nice, but a 382 with twins is a nice alternative and a bit more efficient.

Personally, I would like to have seen Formula put out a stepped 419 with #6 drives and big power (say maybe 1000's? :D ). That would have been "the cat's backside" and great competition for the Tiger and 41 Apache! It's just not the market Formula wanted to get into though. :(

Hey RedDog and Troutly,

Thanks for the input. That clears things up alot. I have a question for both of you. What speeds are you guys seeing with your 382's? Troutly, you mentioned that you wanted your 382 to perform better, I would think that with your power,
HP500 efi You should be seeing mid 70's 74-75.

RedDog,

I would imagine that you are seeing high 70's into the low 80's, Because it is the Poker Run Special.

Thanks
QD :D

Quick Decision,
I own a 1998 382 Fastech with HP 500's (carb),no boxes and unlabbed 28" bravo one props. It will run 73 mph any time, the best I saw was today 76.5, cool temps and a 2 ft chop helped. I agree with Troutly that a little more power would be nice.

Re: 382 or 419 formula How fast???

QD,

I have the '99 Poker Run Special which came with 585 H.P. Lingenfelter-modified 502s. The previous owner had the motors built up to 950 H.P. blower motors. Reportedly ran 114 m.p.h. between outdrive failures! He pulled the motors and put them in his new 40 Skater.

I bought the 382 without power and in dropped the 650 H.P. Sterlings out of my 311. With unlabbed 28 Bravo's, I have seen 84 to 86 M.P.H. under optimal conditions. I think there is a little more in it yet with labbed props.

By the way, I have Stellings extension boxes on mine, Troutly has ITS on his. I'm not sure if they really make that much difference on a 382, but I wouldn't want to give them up ... they look neat as $hit! :D

What is the actual headroom in the 419? 4'10" in the 382 right?

Re: 382 or 419 formula How fast???

Hi
I own a 419 SR 1 (non stepped hull ) with Triple 496 HO Lab finished Bravo 1 26 pitch props no boxes very low X- Dimension

Top speed is 73 MPH (almost the same speed than a 382 Fas Tech with twin 500 EFIs ) The 496 HO need altogether 90 gal /hour at wide open throttle - I think twin 500 EFI need about 84 gal / hour

So I would never change my boat to a 382 - the only intersting change will be a 419 Fas Tech -
I Think they never build one with 496 HO - would have been a great package - Triple 496 HO cost less than twin 500 EFI and you get great performance

My boat is running all day with 10 Persons on board into the rev- limiter
I will upgrade next year to Extensionboxes and shorter drives and 28 pitch lab finished props - hope to see 78 - 80 MPH with the new setup

Re: 382 or 419 formula How fast???

Goofy,

What year is your 419? I thought the 496's came out after the introduction of the Fastech hull. Was it repowered at some point or were the 496's factory installed?

What part of the country are you located and what does it cost to insure your 419?

Any pictures? :D

Sounds like some nice upgrade plans coming. Let us know how that works out when you are done!

Re: 382 or 419 formula How fast???

Goofy--- if you run with the 38's how does the 419 w/triples do on fuel consumption in comparison at cruising conditions? When at fuel stops are you using that much more fuel? There is a 91' 419 in the classifieds that seems to be a good deal. I was also curious about insurance on one. Would love to see some pics of yours

My 419 was build 1991 - It was a dealers boat show boat - I purchased it in 1998 and at this time it came first time into the water.
It was factory equipped with TWIN Mercruiser 465 wit Bravo 1 1:1,36 and
19 ` Mirage Props - Top speed was 57 MPH
In 2002 I made a big change to Triple 496 HO s with Bravo 1 X 1:1,50 and lab finished 26 `Bravo 1 Props
I am boating on the northern part of the River Rhine in Germany and in the Summer I tow my boat to spain (Ibiza and Mallorca)

some more pics

my boat is a non stepped SR 1

This boat runs great , you can make full turns at wide open throttle and the hull just goes thru the water like a hot knife thru butter.
as You can see on the photos the x Dimension is very deep ( I think the factory choosed this x dimension, because at the time the boat was build there were only Mirage Props available)- so there is still a lot speed to find with shorter drives and extension boxes.

At 3000 RPM I need 10 gal /hour /engine (Easy to see on the smartcraft 5000 monitors) an get a speed of 38 - 40 MPH

I never need tabs to come on plane and it just takes 5 seconds.
I pay about 2500 € for insurance thats about 2800 US $

Best regards
goofy

Goofy-
Nice Looking 419!! You must do some serious long distance traveling by the looks of your electronics. The internet sure does make the world a much smaller place. Cheers!

Goofy,

Now I know who you are! I have seen a few pics of your boat in another thread. Really like it!

It really came rigged with twins? I heard there were a few out there. Would like to have seen one of these twin 419's converted to #6's! :D

Where did you get the re-rigging to triples done? Is there a Formula dealer over there? Or was this done somewhere else or did you do the work yourself? Looks like a really nice, clean job. Thanks for the pics!

The former german Formula dealer "Tibus" in Rhumspringe Germany did this great job. He is no longer Formula dealer because he did not sell much Formulas in the last years , but the new dealers do not sell more. The problem here in Germany is, that because of a bad exchange rate together with higher factory prices the german sell prices raised from 1998 to now about 80 % . Who can pay 80 % more . I do not know lots of guys who can.
But this is a major problem that all american boat factories have here in europe, its not a special Formula problem.

goofy

hey Goofy,

hast du dein boot noch?

ich würde mir gerne ein 91er 419er tripple kaufen, bräuchte mal die maße höhe breite und länge mit trailer , um den versand vorab zu klären.
und das ungefähre gewicht.
danke im voraus,

I own a 1995 (pre fastech hull) with 525 SC's. The boat runs 72mph and is very stable at that speed. Only 218 hours on the motors but never a issue. Had a cracked metering block on a carb 10 years ago (way out of warranty) and Holley fixed for free and I paid the shipping. Love the Formula boats, very solid and fit and finish is great. Not the fastest in its class but probably the best in the class.

I really like the 419, I would love to SEE one 419 fastech with following installation :

Staggerd with the new Merc 860 or Merc 1350 S

Wonder what kind of speed one with those options 😁😁??

I am still ok with my 271 SR1 496 HO Bravo X drive and 64 mph he he 🚤🚤

aquaforce 05-29-2020 01:57 AM

I would like to push my 419 power up. It does well with the 502MPI's but some lighter engines, more HP and extension boxes and it would be awesome. I drove a 2001 with blue 500's and stellings boxes and it handled far better than mine without boxes. The heavy weight of all iron in the back of mine doesn't help either. Just getting rid of some iron would do wonders for weight and might even speed mine up some. It is stepped and runs 70mph with 415HP black motors.
