Default 382 or 419 formula How fast???

Hi guys,

I have been looking at 382's and 419's for awhile now (no I don't want to buy one, can't afford it )and I wanted to know which one is faster. I am assuming a 419 would be faster since it has one more engine. But It is weighs so much more than a 382. Also what in your opinions is the best of the two. and is formula still making the 419 fastech??? I heard somthing about being able to "speacial order one" but I don't know if this is true or not.

Thanks
QD

The 419 is a little faster with the same power, with not much more than 1 foot extra usable room than the 382. The 419 is not made anymore, and I've heard that they will not make any more even as a special order. The 419 was built totally different than the rest of the FasTech lineup.

Troutly,

Your boat is so awesome. I love the "Storm" graphics they are my
favorite. That is the BEST looking 382 I've ever seen. If i could only afford it .

So the 419 was not a big seller. I wonder why? I really like it and the 382 as well. I would like to own either one.

I have a 311 sr1 right now and am extremely happy with it except for the fact that it does breakdown quite a bit, but I am going to pull the engines out pretty soon and rebuild. I doubt that you have any problems with your 382.

QD,

I think one of the big issues with the 419 is insurance. I have been with my carrier since high-school (a LONG time!) without a major claim, and they said they simply would not insure a 419 due to the combined H.P. rating. My coverage for the 382 is a little over $1000.00 annually vs around $700.00 for my '89 311. Coverage for a 419 would have exceeded $3000.00!

I think another issue is portability of a 419. A 382 is much more difficult to tow than a 311, and a 419 with triples would be extremely difficult for the average person to tow or transport.

Troutly is right ... there is very little difference in usable space between a 382 and a 419 (except that you could squeeze a few more 'kini's on the engine hatch). But I've heard the stepped 419's ride is fantabulous. The extra three feet would be nice, but a 382 with twins is a nice alternative and a bit more efficient.

Personally, I would like to have seen Formula put out a stepped 419 with #6 drives and big power (say maybe 1000's? ). That would have been "the cat's backside" and great competition for the Tiger and 41 Apache! It's just not the market Formula wanted to get into though.

Hey RedDog and Troutly,

Thanks for the input. That clears things up alot. I have a question for both of you. What speeds are you guys seeing with your 382's? Troutly, you mentioned that you wanted your 382 to perform better, I would think that with your power,
HP500 efi You should be seeing mid 70's 74-75.

RedDog,

I would imagine that you are seeing high 70's into the low 80's, Because it is the Poker Run Special.

Thanks
QD

Quick Decision,
I own a 1998 382 Fastech with HP 500's (carb),no boxes and unlabbed 28" bravo one props. It will run 73 mph any time, the best I saw was today 76.5, cool temps and a 2 ft chop helped. I agree with Troutly that a little more power would be nice.

QD,

I have the '99 Poker Run Special which came with 585 H.P. Lingenfelter-modified 502s. The previous owner had the motors built up to 950 H.P. blower motors. Reportedly ran 114 m.p.h. between outdrive failures! He pulled the motors and put them in his new 40 Skater.

I bought the 382 without power and in dropped the 650 H.P. Sterlings out of my 311. With unlabbed 28 Bravo's, I have seen 84 to 86 M.P.H. under optimal conditions. I think there is a little more in it yet with labbed props.

By the way, I have Stellings extension boxes on mine, Troutly has ITS on his. I'm not sure if they really make that much difference on a 382, but I wouldn't want to give them up ... they look neat as $hit!

What is the actual headroom in the 419? 4'10" in the 382 right?
