Formula 302 and 402 sr1 questions
Calling all 302 sr1 and 402 sr1 owners,
I was looking at the vintage section of formula.com, and was checking out the early-mid 80's (80-86) formula brochures. I could not get over the 302 and 402 sr1's. They are so great looking
So I began to wonder about the engine and drive packages of both the 302 and 402.
My questions are,
1) what engine and drive packages were available on both boats?
2) what speeds were both boats seeing?
3) are KAAMA drives hard to plane and dock the boat with? and do they make a boat faster?
As I look at the older birds in comparison to the new ones, I really like the older ones better because of the styling and the interior designs(more room) . Plus the older birds seem to have longer snouts and I like that alot.
any info on this would be great
thanks,
QD

Re: Formula 302 and 402 sr1 questions
1) They came with mostly 330hp 454's with TRS drives. Next was the 420hp 454 with the Kaama drives, a few as I understand but have never seen run 350 small blocks with TRS drives also. I was thinking about going with small blocks in mine but decided to stay big blocks.
2) Mine see's about 55 with stock 330's. I gained almost 5mph when I lifted the drives when I redid my transom.
3) Kaama's make the boat quite a bit faster, say 5mph over a TRS boat. They are a little more difficult to manuver and a little slower tot plane but that is just something that you get used to.

Re: Formula 302 and 402 sr1 questions
There are also a lot of other older models that are great boats. The old 272s are nearly as big as a modern 30 footer.
272, 292, 302, 311, 357 and 402 were all older models before the molded in swim platforms and are about 2 feet bigger than the size indicates (My 357 is 37'7" with the swim platform). Did I miss any models?
On some they switched from the squared off windshield to the rounded:
272s started square and was later rounded. I'm not sure but I think it is the same with the 292 and 402. The 357 always had the rounded corners on the windshield. I think all of the 302s had the square windshield. Not sure about the 311.
All are great older boats!

My 84 302 had Merc 370's with TRS drives when I got it (although they may not have been original). The motors are now 496's, Dart Pro 1 325cc Aluminum heads, 10.25 CR, and Holley 1000 cfm carbs. My best speed so far is 73.4 mph (on gps in salt water) with 25" Mirage props. I think these older formula's have great styling, and are a great bargain if you find one in good shape.
As for repairing them talk to Audiofn. I think he has done just about everything imaginable.

I look at the work you have done and all I can say is... I would have shot myself.
After reading your posts on the rot around the gas tank/stringers I pulled my seats and the floor hatch. Fortunately it was all dry and shows no sign of deterioration. My next project is to replace the rub rail and get a windshield/windscreen.
