Okay, as most of you know, I dropped the "silent thunder" box off Outlaw for the clean transom look. Got my new Stainless Marine tips from UPS the other day, their georgous.

My question is: My boat has palm beach graphics which I don't mind. However, the stripes kind of just curl around the corner of the transom and just die out. The silent thunder box hid that. Now that the box is off, it looks pretty stupid plus the "taped" lines are a little sloppy. You never saw that before, now it's out there for the whole world to see.

I've lightly sanded the back of the transom and it is now bright white. I gotta figure what to do with the way the stripes just curl around and end abruptly. I was kind of toying with the idea of masking off in the basic configuration of where the box originally was, and spraying it teal. From the bottom up under the rub rail. The new tips would then be exiting through teal. So the transom would be two tone, teal and white.

But I honestly have no idea what to do. Would like some suggestions. Of those Formula owners who do not have the silent thunder, how is your transom done? Thanks. Russ

I've been thinking about the same thing on the 20 I'm painting. I may do it somewhat like my 302. They kill the stripes with a solid color then carry it around the transom.

I'll try but will need help here. When I download off the camera's memory stick, it is too large to then upload to OSO. How do I downsize the picture so it will upload to OSO? Remember I'm just getting acquainted with this picture thing. I'll try posting a picture tomorrow, if I can't get it, I'll ship it to you via email and then you can put it on OSO like we did before. I really gotta get this post pix on OSO thing down. But like I said I gotta figure out how to downsize once I've got it stored. What's the OSO size limits? Thanks.

My new computer is supposed to have a program in it to do all that. It's just the computer is so much smarter than me.

Good news about "Bad News". Outlaw is getting very very close. The exhaust spacers should be done by midweek and then it's just putting it back together.

So it sounded good with the box off huh???? HMMMMMMMM........

If you have XP, go to
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...ertoySetup.exe

It's pretty slick - all you have to do is when browsing the folder where the images are, just right click on the image, and a new option will be there "Resize pictures". Simple and it works great.

I'd tape a straight line on corner and buff off any stripe on transom, and keep transom white! We all have more than enough teal on our boats.

That's not a bad idea at all CMG. It would be pretty easy too. HA, I say that now says the optamistic boat owning fool. :D :D

I keep going back and forth about putting on a tube swim platform. After I've got it finished, I want to supermipose a platform on it and see what it would look like.

Re: Like suggestions please

Russ, I'd go with full black starting at about you bilge outlet at an angle that gets wider as it goes down, then do the whole transom in black to the water line. You'll like having a black transom. As far as swim platform, I'd leave it off. Then next year count how many times you say "I wish I had a swim platform". A clean transom looks like the real deal, not a sunchasing trawler. Kind of goes with my thought about the "B" word. :drink:

Ok why is it that I am thinking just cut the stipes back to the corner and leave the transom white?????? Simple easy and I think it will look killer.

I think it would look like someone removed the silent thunder, then left it like that.

Re: Like suggestions please

Cuda, can you draw the lines for me how you would do it in black, I'm kind of having a hard time visualizing it.

Would you bring the angle from the bilge pump forward or rearward?

Another thought is white would appear cleaner longer. Soon as you splash a black boat in salt water it looks dirty.

I'm really lost on what to do here. I was thinking teal for awhile, but like CMG said, we have enough teal on the boats and it damn sure isn't going to be Magenta. I'm ultimately going to go over the magenta stripe with yellow. Maybe I should do the transom in yellow? Hell I don't know. Keep the suggestions coming please, I'm really stuck on this issue.

Eddie Marine sent me all the brackets I need for the oil filters, shift brackets, and ignition modules yesterday, AT NO CHARGE. That was really cool. Now I just need to get the riser gaskets and pick up the riser spacers, supposedly tomorrow.

Ah, Grasshopper, salt on the transom doesn't look nearly as bad as soot! :)

Russ-

Don't leave the back white. It looks unfinished. It you are going to do anything just wrap the stripes around the back of the boat.
If you are going to go through that much work you might as well just paint the entire boat the way you want. It would be worth the work. I know it was for me.

How's this for a basic idea? It's not Monet, as I spent all of 30 seconds on it, but a basic idea. Basically like Cuda's rear, but teal instead of black to match your colors. Also only one color to deal with. These 311 as so ass heavy, you barely see the rear anyways! Unless you are designing this to be yard art (i.e. not planning to go in the water this decade), then that's a different story :)

I'd just leave it white. I don't think it will look like you took off the silent thunder if you leave it white. Someone who has a Formula with a silent thunder platform might know you took it off but nobody else will. Before the days of the silent thunder the stripes terminated right around the transom and the transom was mostly white. Here's the back of my 357.

Thanks for all the suggestions, now I'm really confused.......

DD13, want to paint the boat, but I want to use it for awhile first. It's been down since last New Year's Day.

Are you planning to put on any kind of a swim platform? There's an '89 Palm Beach 311 that hangs out in the the same bay in Lake St Clair that I do. He got rid of his Silent Thunder and put one of those tubular frame platforms on his. He painted it teal to match the boat and it looks great.

I have a strong feeling that's what I'm going to end up doing. Deb is really bit(hing about me taking the swim platform off, although she has told me on at least five occasions now she's never setting foot on the boat again.

Depending on the next month or two, (relationship wise) I might relent and put the tube platform on to try to appease her. And there are times when it's handy, like tying off at docks, etc. I just like the look of the clean transom.

At the moment I'm leaning on grinding the striping off right at the corner, leaving it white, and then, if I have to, put the tubed platform on.

Another thing I noticed what how much the rest of the felcoat has "aged" in color. The new transom is much whiter than the rest of the boat so I'm going to have to "blend" it somehow until next year when the boat will get painted.

Re: Like suggestions please

The idea came to me about maybe grinding the stripes off on the side just before the transom. Starting with the top small teal stripe maybe just before the bilge pump hole and then following an angle towards the rear as I take out the rest of the stripes, kind of a "reverse" angle than what the "norm" is for Formula. So as you looked at it from the side from top to bottom it would angle backwards, with the longest stripe being at the bottom. What do you guys think that might look light. I just kind of thought it wouldn't look so "blunt" as just stopping it at the corner of the transom.

I always thought soot was the result of blower motors or motors that were running way too rich. Is this wrong???? I never had soot problems with my 242 which was a clean transom running twin small blocks.

I've pretty much made up my mind about keeping the transom white. (basically I don't want to get into yet another major project like painting).

I think the new tips and tie bar would look good against a high gloss white.
