"New Look" transom, getting closer
2 Attachment(s)
Well this is how it is until I can paint the whole boat. It was easy and I think looks okay. The tips are temporarily held in by double-sided tape, I just kinda was antsy to see what it was going to look like. They already back out. Too windy today to paint the lowers silver, bummer.
Slowly but surely...... |

Looks good! you must have cleaned up the stripe ends on the corners. Ever try FSR? Works well with stained f-glass - Give it a shot around your tabs and drives, should take off the grime.

Re: "New Look" transom, getting closer
Thanks CMG, thought you'd like it. It was actually easy.
Where do I get the FSR stuff, Boat US/West Marine?????? Pissed I couldn't paint the lowers today, way too windy. Warm though, high 70's. |

Re: "New Look" transom, getting closer
Russ, you can get FSR at any of the boat places. It takes off nearly all stains.

[QUOTE=cuda]What fun run are you holding out on??

Like Cuda said, most should have it, heres west marine http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs...01&keyword=fsr I had local shop get in stock for me. If that fails you can always use ON/OFF - just hold your breathe - scrub on and don't leave long. Good Luck! Chris G. |
Re: "New Look" transom, getting closer

|
Re: "New Look" transom, getting closer
Russ,
Can't get over how good that looks!!!!!!! |
Re: "New Look" transom, getting closer
Russ,
Looks great! Maybe a tubular platform in black or the blue/green color of the larger stripe?! |
Re: "New Look" transom, getting closer
I have a feeling a tube platform will be going on to make Deb happy. Well that might be a bit of a stretch, making her happy that is.
Thanks guys. I got the tips from Too Old, Stainless Marine with the internal flaps, (ones that DO NOT make noise or burn out). Hope my gaskets get here today. |
Re: "New Look" transom, getting closer
I figured you would go the simple rout with the stripes after looking at all the other options!!! :D:D I think it looks great. I was looking at it trying to think if you could taper them off some how but I do not think so..... The fat one would be to hard...

Re: "New Look" transom, getting closer
Looks great now, get that thing in the water I think that`s were it belongs. :D
Let Cuda know you can still use a boat when it is 74* thats a good day up here. |
Re: "New Look" transom, getting closer
It looks great! Put a white tubular swim platform on that thing and the transom will look even more like it was supposed to be white. Next thing we know you'll be removing the rest of that teal paint. ;-)
|
Re: "New Look" transom, getting closer
How hard is it to remove the paint without messing anything up?
Cause Ive seen a few all white formulas and they look real nice! |
Re: "New Look" transom, getting closer
Actually, ultimately the boat WILL be all white.
I guess there are a couple of routes to go as far as removing paint goes. What I did was put 150 grit sandpaper in an orbital palm sander and very gently went at it. I only burned the gelcoat in one small place, an easy repair. It took me about half an hour a side. I was REALLY impressed how just masking off with masking tape enabled the sander to sand a really fine line. Now I'm going to go back over it by hand and wet sand it with 220, 400, and 600 to get the gloss back then wax it good. You don't EVEN know how close I came to just keep going right up the side of the boat and taking all the striping out. But then there's the foredeck to do. Right now I want to just enjoy it for awhile, then I'll go for the all white look. Right now from what I've learned, I figure that it would take me a hundred hours to sand all the paint off, fix any and all stress cracks, then buff everything out to a brilliant shine. I think that's what I'm going to do though. The price I've gotten for painting the boat is outrageous. |
Re: "New Look" transom, getting closer
Once you start the paint job, you'll find out why it's so expensive!................Cause it's worth it! :drink:
|
Re: "New Look" transom, getting closer
Russ ... what would be Ball park price to paint ? Oh .."BadNews" is home .....another 5K ....think I'm going to just let it hang there awhile ...

good thing that was Warranty work !!! Also, start Bad News at least once a week. When a boat just sits, is when things start going funky. Trust me I KNOW..... |
Re: "New Look" transom, getting closer
Russ, all the money is in the prep. Trust me, you could spray it yourself. Post a "before" pic for me.

Re: "New Look" transom, getting closer
I have a number of a gel coat repair guy in St Pete. He did my Donzi.
|
Re: "New Look" transom, getting closer
His first name is Charles, I forgot his last name. 727-381-4321 He charges $50 an hour plus material (the material ain't squat).

Re: "New Look" transom, getting closer
Nice man, looks good where you take the paint off, for a really good shine I suggest that you wet sand all the way up to 1000-1200 grit, ive done alot of wet sanding, sanding all the way down to really shining chrome on a "goped" that I have and its worth it if you go all the way up to the 1000 grits.
Good luck man! |
Re: "New Look" transom, getting closer
I've done a chitload of "metal" polishing, mostly on bikes. I'd read somewhere that on FG 600 was as far down as you really had to go. But I'm really "psycho" so I might take it down to 1800 for all I know. Then I'll end up doing the whole boat. Or paint it. Or whatever.
Fred, for better or worse, you are a giant part of the reason the transom is coming out good. I am so psyched. Now if only Santa would bring me some polished trim tabs with my favorite suppliers logo on it. I need to talk to you about "tie bars". I'll call you tomorrow. I emailed you a little while ago. |

The "things to do on the boat list" is the longest list in the history of lists. It is never ending, and cares little about expense. It demands our attention. It's like a bad accident, we cannot look away.
And then the yelling from the wives begins. |

I think the boat looks great. Considering the above , why don't you bolt the tubular platform on and run it "as is" for a little while. All white with "Outlaw" would be cool, but there is still something about the classic lines/designs of the "older" Formula. Bro ... you've got a really nice boat. Why not sit back, chill out, enjoy it, and maybe for a little while NOT give her something else to bi*** about?! Throw her for a loop! I bet she wouldn't know how to handle it. |

I committed last night to putting a tubular swim platform on, probably white, since SHE likes to sit back there and dangle her legs in the water. Will probably be a little while before I can afford it, they are NOT cheap. I'd like to sell my "silent thunder box" but does not seem to be much interest in it. So I'm going to clean it up real good and store it for now. I remembered to take the movies back to Movie Gallery yesterday morning BEFORE they were due, that threw her a curve in itself. :D :D |
Re: "New Look" transom, getting closer
I would try and stay away from the 180 grit paper. You will always see the scratches. I wonder if Gell coat safe paint remover would take off the stripes? Just a thought there. If I was trying to remove the stripes with sanding I would start with probably 600 or at most 320 grit. The more you wetsand the better it will shine and also stay clean. One side of my boat I sanded a LOT better then the other. I lost patience and just wanted to get it in the water. One side stays REAL clean and the other not so clean....
