292???

I currently have a 2000 271 Fastech, and I am considering a 2004 292 Fastech. any thoughts from anyone on the 292? the one I am considering has twin 6.2L merc's, the dealer is saying 75ish on gps. the 6.2 puts out 320 horses, where a set of 350's puts out 300 horses each. anything thoughts on paying the extra money for the engines as well? all input appreciated!

The 292 is a very nice boat, we like ours very much. I'd go with the 6.2s, has a little more tork than the 350. I don't think you'll see 75ish, more like 69-71ish, but a good ride.

Zoomer, I have the 6.2s, which I like very much. I'm set up for a better mid range cruise than WOT, but I run 70gps.

Re: 292???

I am of the un-informed opinion that the 6.2's are out of production and after-market perforance parts are scarce. I'm sure some on the board can offer more input regarding that statement. If true, I would be concerned because you will want to boost the HP eventually. (Or the next owner will want to and pass on your boat.)

We have the 6.2's and don't think i'd go with much less. The boat has run 70.2 gps w/4 people and less than a 1/2 tank of gas so I'm with Live Wire II, you won't see much of 70 with the standard steup. That was on relatively smooth water around 65 deg. The 6.2's do a great job from 30 - 60mph and will give you about all you want. Also I'd recommend going with the Lathem steering with the 6.2's. Moving up to twins for us was an experience and gave me....more things to have to dial in, adjust, push, pull, etc. The steering just helps make the transition smoother. After I figured it out I don't know how I ever got around with a single and without tabs.

As for upgrading the hp if you want, I don't think I'd do it with a 292. For safety's sake if you want more speed I'd go with a bigger boat that can handle the speed better. 70mph in a 292 is fun but I'd feel more comfortable going faster in something bigger. So if you're thinking eventually more hp, you might just want to look 312 or 353 fastech with the ponys. If that's not an option and more hp is what you want, I think Whipple now makes add on's for the 6.2.

Here's a pic. Nothing fancy but it'll make you really want to get that boat.

Good luck and let me know if you have any more ?????

The 6.2's are not going away, you may be thinking of the 377 Scorpion version,it was too expensive for the market. The 320 hp 6.2 should be around for a long time.

Re: 292???

I'm not surprized the Scorpions are being discontinued, when I looked at a 292 year before last, the upgrade to Scorps was $32k!

I ended up buying a bigger, faster, (although older) whole damn boat for less than the upgrade to Scorps. :p
